Apple TV - Awesome!!!
Discussion
I finally received my 1080p Apple TV yesterday. Having never had one I was wondering how long it would take to set-up and how easy/good it would be to use.
All I can say is it's pretty bloomin amazing. It took all of 3 minutes to get working - straight out of the box - and watching pretty much anything I want is now so easy.
Great product, really impressed.

We love our apple tv but it does have some limitations on what it can let you watch - may I suggest you take a look at

this will open it up to its fullest potential and is reamrkeably easy to do

To add to this, you can actually do this for free but it is a PITA. For $29 it transforms Apple TV into a far better product. I use XBMC for watching all our films which are streamed from a NAS in various (mainly in MKV file format) formats. http://firecore.com/atvflash-black

What is the benefit over love film or netflix etc
Well, you can stream Netflix on the thing as it comes already with Netflix on the device. As for rooting the device to play all sorta of things. If you have an idvice, you don't need to jailbreak anything. Plenty of apps out there will play stuff from your computer, and convert on the fly and play over AirPlay. You can also mirror the display on your idvice to the screen, (and you will be able to do the same for your OSX display as well with ML), without wires, or any of that nonsense.
It does make sense of you have iTunes, or idevices.
I bought the new Apple TV last week as well. Fab! Just what I've been looking for. I have loads of films on my PC that I don't watch very often because I'm too idle to swap the ones on my iPad - but now I can just stream them to the TV.
Nice, easy setup, too. All in all a very cool little gadget!

The only thing I do question is now that I have it can I use it on mulitple devices? As I'm thinking of getting an apple tv for upstairs too.

Eventually found the option to add photos to itunes, anyone know how I can view them on an iPAD?
Any ideas on how to add non itunes purchased movies to it as well?
I can't help with the photos, but for movies you can use something like Handbrake to convert them into an iPad-ready format. Any ideas on how to add non itunes purchased movies to it as well?

I know about Handbrake, how do I get them into iTunes?
Figured it out, you need to tell it where the folder is!
Can you store iTunes movies (or handbrake conveyed movies) on an external hard drive and link them to iTunes.Figured it out, you need to tell it where the folder is!

Macbook hard drive filling up so wondering how hard it would be to stick movies on external hard drive but still keep iTunes on laptop.
Also have the new apple TV. its very very easy, and even with my terrible internet speed at home, it loads 1080p movies/tv series up surprisingly quick.
Havnt tried Netflix yet.

I keep all my movies, tv shows, and the bulk of my music on external drives and they link to iTunes. What I do is have 2 accounts on the MacBook. One iTunes on one account is used for external stuff, and the main account for my local stuff. Using homesharing I can access both accounts on my apple TV, iPad, etc, so access both the external stuff, and the local stuff. As I said, if you do use iTunes, apple gear, it is a superb device.
