My neighbour is having trouble with his gearshift indicator reading wrong, it's one of these.

It was unplugged from the gearbox, a 6 speed sequential, to fit a new clutch and since then it won't show the correct gear selected.

It's showing,
In neutral - 6th
In 1st - Rev
2nd - Neutral

The pins in the bottom right of pic 2, when working were,
1 - on/up
2 - off/down
3 - on/up
4 - off/down

Quaife say they should be,
1 - up/on
2,3,4 - down/ off

Neither settings will get it to work

The box was removed whilst in neutral and put back in neutral and not touched when out.

Does anyone have any idea as to where he could be going wrong?

The "Box" reads the varriable voltage produced by a potentiometer that is attached to the gear selection barrel (or disc) in the gearbox. This potentiometer has 3 pins, Power(5v), Gnd(0v), and signal (sorry can't remember exactly the order in the connector).

As you shift gears, the potentiometer is rotated and changes the output voltage.

As the selector barrel goes R N 1 2 3 4 5 6, the output voltage should vary smoothly and monotomically with gear selected.

There is a chance of a dodgey earth causing the symtoms you are having.

Using a multimeter, check either the output voltage or the potentiometers resistance whilst you shift gears.

It is unlikely that the "setup" DIP switches have been altered (unless someones been playing... ;-), more likely the Potentiometer or loom has been damaged / not earthed during the work done.
