Okay, it was on a Motorway, but still, a wee bit unexpected.

Estimate it would have been doing approx 90, looked like an 80s Granada based one, only driver on board (as far as I could tell).

Anyway, got me thinking about stability. It was windy, it's quite a high sided vehicle and pretty old too. Watched it carefully until it disappeared from view.

Would you be worried about a vehicle like this doing this kind of speed?

Anyone else been overtaken by a hearse?

Very popular with the Goths, saw loads of those old Granada hearses last time I was in Whitby.

My old and much missed Hearse "Cordelia" was based on a mk2 Granada with the 2.8 carb engine so about 120bhp but being mainly fibreglass she was pretty rapid and with a very long wheelbase and rear pneumatic suspension as most hearses have to keep the back end level she was a fantastic high speed cruiser.

The old undertaker I bought her from in Brecon even got a speeding ticket with an empty coffin on board not long before I bought her!

biggrin

Driver was in the usual gear, platform for coffin still present, car immaculate looking, seemed very much as though it was still being used for its original purpose.

Ivan imagine a few PHers asking for their hearse not to be driven slowly smile
<useless fact most hearses are double deckers>

Yep, I've been overtaken by a hearse.

I was dead embarrassed.

I've been overtaken by loads. Company car drivers being forced into them for tax reasons, and proceeding to hammer the life out of the things. The fastest car on the road these days is the one where the driver isn't paying for the fuel.

I've heard that these get taken for a blast before MOTs to give them a clear out.

Happened to me on the M271 last week as well! For the benefit of the driver I'm going to say I was sat just below the speed limit. No problem with it, just a little unexpected!

Yeah, of corpse you were, at 90 mph it would be a grave offence and could result in a stiff penalty.
