Current laptop has 56K modem.

Would this be able to be plugged into a 256K broadband system and still work at a slower rate or would it need a new modem?

I reckon you need a new modem. Did the broadband supplier not supply one?

you'll need a lan cable with RJ45's

uni should be able to provide with one and the software to connect you. That is provided you have a network card.

nothing to do with 56k modem

also check as most uni's now now are hot spots so you should be able to go wi-fi again with the correct hardware (card)

the modem would work on a standard phone line, if the line had bb, then it would work off the phone section of the filter. You would have to pay for the phone calls!

To use the bb you need a bb modem, bout £40 for a usb one, i think? correct me if i'm wrong

Would work out cheaper and much faster if you used the bb in the long run.

Most likely to be RJ45, but you may have a wireless LAN on campus which is very useful.

You should have a ethernet port on the laptop if not you can get PCMIA cards quite cheaply.

Email me off line if you want a CAT5 (RJ45)cable as I have loads and there not that cheap in the shops.
