I would never have a yellow car, except this one...

Two questions:

(1) shall I fit period correct alloys? (Brand Lotus or maybe Dunlop)

(2) Should I apply black pinstripes in the usual Europa places?

So far, I think (1) yes, and (2) no.

The wheels are original. They would look better, I think, on an S1 or S2 car. Most Twin Cams and Specials had factory fitted alloy wheels.

PS: I agree about the pinstripe.

I wholeheartedly agree with you on both accounts, leave the pinstripes, and definitely hunt for some nice period wheels. Not wobblywebbs though because they are not appropriate!

Oh very good.

I was watching that ebay auction.

It did jump up quite a bit in the last 2 minutes.

Congratulations.

I started bidding with about 90 seconds on the clock, and had a tussle with one other keen person. I went slightly above the point at which I had instructed myself to stop, but not by much, and in my opinion, the car is well worth the money. I aim to spend a bit on it to remedy some minor defects. It is in many ways a better car than was my Europa Special, which I sold last year.

That makes my mind up for me, thanks. With the steel wheels, the car looks like the 60s, but with the alloys. it looks like a child of the 70s, as it is. I know where I can get some of the Brand Lotus wheels, so clickety click goes the shopping mouse.

That is a lovely example, seems I am alone in preferring the steel wheel option

I shall fit the alloys, but keep the steel wheels in storage, with a protective coating of chip oil or some such. I would not put the alloys on the car if it were an S1 or S2, but I am unlikely ever to own one of those, as I prefer the twin cam engines and lower side fins of the later cars.

I became smitten with the Europa when I was about ten years old (in the year that my car was made), and throughout my adult life, owning various classic cars, had always wanted a Chapman breadvan. I have to say that the type has lived up t omy expectations, being quite simply the best sports car that I have ever driven. Only a Caterham or an Elise compare to the car in my experience, and I prefer the style and creature comforts of the Europa to the spartan rawness of those comparator cars. Cross country, the only car of the 70s that I know that handles as well as a Europa is a 105 series Alfa coupe. I have not driven a Ferrari Dino, I hasten to add. The Europa was described as the poor man's Dino when new. Also, I have not driven a mid 1960s Formula One car, but the Europa is said to convey some of the feel of those machines, which had mid mounted 1.6 litre engines (although tuned to more like 180-90 BHP rather than the 110 to 125 BHP of the twin cam Europas).

You have a nicely stocked garage, I'm quite envious. I looked for a lotus elan plus2 when I got my morgan, but as I needed it to be a pretty much daily driver, so went with the Morgan.

Really nice car, I've wanted one of these since seeing one as a kid. I much prefer the lower twin cam bodywork as well, plus you actually get a rear view mirror. What sort of MPG do they manage, I remember reading a review of an Elan plus 2 which claimed high 30's on a long journey?
