Freelander 2 aircon - hissing noise

We had a family jaunt in my Missus car today. After starting it up after been parked for an hour the aircon was making a loud hissing noise & then a kind of gurgling noise.
There was still air coming out but not ice cool air con air, come to think of it it has never been ice cold.
Do you think a re- gas will solve the problem or shall I brace myself for a expensive bill?
