Start by screwing the hexagonal bump stops right down. If that doesn't work, look to see if the bottom latch adjusts by bolts or if the clip on the bonnet has any means of adjustment or whether, if it's mounted on an inner skin, you can pull the latch as it may have depressed from overly-enthusiastic slamming.

Personally, I wouldn't drive the thing on the looser latch any more than I had to; that's only there to catch the bonnet if the main latch lets go, it's not designed for prolonged use.

If it's the same mechanism as on a Mondeo you probably need to take it to the dealers and get it replaced as it's not an adjustment issues, but a problem with the mechanism itself.

My Mondeo packed up towards the end of winter 2010/11... the mechanism gets blocked with salt/dirt and eventually it won't fully lock down... according to my local Ford dealers it's a well known issue.

No idea of cost as the lease company paid.

Try latching the mechanism shut with a screwdriver or any thin bar,

Then at least you will know if it is the latch faulty or a fitment problem.

That's exactly how mine was... the bonnet would latch, but when pressed down the latch wouldn't lock.

No amount of fiddling with the mechanism would get it to lock, so I took it to the dealers... they made a temporary fix until they could get a new mechanism from Germany.
