Sorry if this has been covered before but I have a question about Sirens and thier use. Other than the different sounds which I assume are used for different road conditions the upcoming traffic/junctions etc. are there regulations that should be adhered to in regards to times of use ? I admittedly live on Fulham Road in london so I would expect sirens on a regular basis - however - why at about 3am 5 am etc do I still hear sirens going past the house when there is absolutely no traffic (not surprisingly at that time), it is straight road and everyone is asleep.

Thanks in advance.

There are no regulations to cover emergency use of sirens on emergency vehicles with regards to time.

Sensible use would suggest that at certain times it would be more appropriate not to use them i.e. early hours of the morning and very late at night.

HOWEVER. If an emergency driver is travelling at in excess of the permitted limit and they are involved in some sort of incident due to their driving which could be anything from a complaint by a disgruntled pedestrian to an unfortunate RTA, then all the available warning equipment that the emergency driver has operating at that time will safeguard his/her defence to any allegations thrown at them.

So, some emergency drivers are well aware that it is unsociable to operate sirens during the late/early hours but they are only using them for self protection should anything go wrong.

In a pursuit situation, they should be operating all the time so that the offending driver cannot throw up a defence that "I was unaware the Police car wanted me to stop" and for the protection of the police driver following should someone throw themselves into the road like Emily Pankhurst
