Wasps Nest - this early?

Wasps seem to like our house - we had a nest some years ago between the felt and tiles above our garage and on going in the garage there was an audible drone. I made a small hole in the felt inserted a tube and squirted a lot of ant killer through it (and preparing to run like hell at the same time). It worked.

Last year we could see wasps disappearing under our roof tiles luckily near the guttering so used a wasp killer on any wasp that flew past the window for an hour or so (the info says they carry this into the nest and it kills the colony. Again after a few days of dwindling activity they stopped and job done.

Or so I thought. I have just been up the attic to check my water tank to be greeted by a familar buzzing sound lo and bahold there there were 2 large wasps buzzing around the light. I despatched them and got on. As I was coming down i spotted another one. So it looks as though I have a nest yet again (I read that that wasps do not use the same nest year on year!).

There is no obvious sign of a nest within the attic but if previous history counts for anything they tend to nest between the tiles and roofing felt. I have left one of those electronic deterrents I had lying about switched on in the attic in the hope it might discourage them and they go elsewhere.

BTW the local council won't take any action and the local Mr Wasp et al all want at least £50 (and I guess this will be if the nest is easy to find plus I don't want all my roofing felt damaged trying to find it).

Any thoughts/help/advice?

At this time of year the wasps you are seeing may just be queens that have remained in your house over winter. You can tell because they are bigger than usual.

They are now looking for a good spot in your house to start a nest and lay eggs. KILL THEM NOW! Also be on the look out for golf ball sized nests - they are not big to start with as the queen has to build them herself and she is lazy.

Try to kill the queens and spot the nest before the worker wasps are born.

Wasps are like ants, they never completely go away.

At least one of the wasps did look quite large. Would it not be unusual for there to be more than 1 queen flying around my loft - so far I've seen 3 and killed 2.

Will my sonic deterrent work?

How do i find the nest if it is under the felt?

I like the suggested 'Kill them with Fire' EDLT but the I'd like a house to live in afterwards.

Had to kill on of these last night. Did think it was quite large....so possibly a queen.

Though not quite as big as those Japanese Wasps we've been getting in recent years.

Still, could be worse.....just type 'Garuda Wasp' into google wink

I would be amazed if that worked!

Let me know though as
- i hate and fear wasps more than any other thing in the universe (except maybe the EU, but it's close)
- i have fruit trees

I've murdered a few queens this year already. Might empty a few more cans of Raid into the loft and sheds at the weekend. You can't beat a bit of indescriminate carpet-bombing with chemical weapons.

They do work. Wasps are very territorial, and if they see a 'nest' that isn't theirs, they keep clear.

I speak from experience. I am also irrationally terrified of wasps. Spiders? Meh. Snakes? Meh. AIDS? Meh. Wasps? No chance.

I haven't been stung since the age of 6. To me it is the worse pain in the world. One day I will get stung and realise it isn't that bad hehe

I suspected I had a Wasps nest in the attic as there was a hell of a noise.

When I went up there they were rehearsing for a new tour. Noisy bds.

You are me.

I shall invest in some of those ludicrous fake nests on your recommendation. If i stuck one in an apple tree, are you saying that wasps will avoid the tree and all the yummy apples lying thereabouts? In a bad year I will dispose of perhaps ten thousand dead wasps in my wasp traps, but here seems to be an inexhaustible supply of them. It's a shame they can't be used for fuel tbh.

It IS that bad. I must have gone too close to a nest last summer when I was strimming some undergrowth and didn't notice until my legs started burning - looked down to find quite a few of the buggers attacking me. Didn't realise I could run so fast!

But they really did hurt and each sting swelled up nicely.

Still, went back later and got my revenge. Evil hateful creatures.

They should do, but the prospect of juicy fruit may make the wasps ignore their principles hehe. They work on my patio, but I only have boring plants and trees. Nothing as exotic as fruit trees.

Try one first, see if it works. I will not be held responsible for you bankrupting yourself buying many many 'waspinators' biggrin
