I have a gt3 comfort that has the clubsport seas but no tequipment roll bar/ harness bar jobbie.

I think the lap and crotch straps of 6 pt schroth harness fitted to the clubsport cars attach to seat/ seatbelt mount and it's only the shoulder straps that normally attach to the roll bar.

Therefore- does anyone know if it's possible to attach these to the rear seat mounts, or rear seatbelt mounts which are in the chassis using eye bolts or similar? I thought this could be a good quick solution for better safety before going down the cage route.

The general opinion among enthusiast in the US is that using harness without a rollbar can be more dangerous than using the 3-point belt.
The reason for this thinking is that if you do have a roll-over and the roof is pushed into the car, you are locked in the seat and your head/spine will be pushed down as well. Using only the 3-point belt your body can escape better in this situation.

Download the harness installation PDF from schroth (or other manufacturer, info is mostly the same).
The angle of the shoulder straps is important and mounting them down on the floor behind the chair is way out of the acceptable range.

If you want to run harnesses you really need the half cage as a minimum so that you have an attachment point unless you can find someone who makes a harness mount bar (sort of like a strut brace but you attach your belts to it)

Porscheshop do a cage for the 996:
http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/agency_power...

You could also ask Custom Cages to make you a half cage:

And there's Carnewal too - click Upgrades then scroll down:

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I'll check the schroth website for fitting info too.

Does it definitely have the clubsport seats (Nomex Recaros) or are they the leather covered Recaro buckets (same shape) that were options on the Comforts? I ask because the Nomex Clubsport seats have a metal bar running below the seat that the crotch strap of the 6-point harness attaches to - the Comfort leather buckets don't have this extra brace (unless someone has fitted one afterwards, like I have) so you'll need to check below the seat to see if there is one there and you may need to source one of these if you want to run 6-point belts safely.

I have fitted eyebolts to the rear mounting points in my car. Standard eyebolts just screw straight in. I also have rear seatbelts fitted as the kids sometimes ride in the car (not when I'm using the harness!) which is why I can't fit the Tequipment half cage as it would ruin that aspect of use of the car for me. If you don't need to use the rear then a cage or half cage is the way to go as mounting the shoulder straps of the harness as close to horizontal as possible is ideal, but the MSA do deem it acceptable to mount the belts at up to 45 degrees below the horizontal, which is a range you would fall within if you used eyebolts in the rear seat mounting holes. There is a diagram in Drawing 39 on Page 180 of the MSA 2012 'Blue Book' which can be found here: http://www.msauk.org/uploadedfiles/msa_forms/blueb...

Very interesting, my thanks. You are correct I need the seat bars which are cheap as they are the leather covered ones. Do the schroth gt3 specific harnesses have a long enough reach to the eye bolts or are you using a different set? I will ultimately have tequipment cage or similar but this half way house is appealing for now.

I think 2stis has covered everything you need to know. However, whilst they are nicely made Schroth harnesses and very expensive and I'm not keen on the buckle, in that there is no obvious protruding lever to grab/flick/pull (bearing in mind a marshal may have to do this in a hurry, having never seen that make of harness before).

I'd browse www.demon-tweeks.com for alternatives, all FIA approved, starting from under £130 (Schroth starting from £137) or for entry level ones from £105 www.ears.co.uk

Sorry, I can't help you there - I have Sabelt belts in mine at the moment. I tend to swap the belts between the cars as I generally only have one set 'in date' at any one time but I am considering getting some Schroth ones that can stay in the GT3 once they are out of date so I would be interested to hear how you get on/part numbers if you do buy some that fit. I do have the part number somewhere for what should be the correct ones for 996 GT3, but like you I did wonder whether they were long enough for my use - they'd need to reach the eye bolts near the rear seat area, with the hardware to connect to the eyebolt, as opposed to the loop around the roll cage bar which is also closer and would thus require a shorter shoulder strap. I'll try to get a better look at the belts on a Clubbie or RS next time I am at a track day and see whether it looks like they would still do the job. Schroth definitely sell 'saloon car' fitment belts, with eyebolt mountings, but my worry there is that I think the crutch strap mounting is specific to a GT3, so really I need the GT3 crutch strap fitting but with the saloon model shoulder straps I think. As thegoose said, the cost of the Schroths is not cheap and this has put me off taking the plunge to find out that I have bought something that doesn't quite fit my setup anyway!

Joe,

I think the tequipment one is about half the price of a cage (but not as stiff obviously). Radar picked his up at a decent price from the pcgb forum, drop him an email and Im sure he'll keep an eye out for one for you (he found my RS wing that way for me!)

Sounds like fitting the belts to the lower mounting point isnt that safe. If you want an interim solution try a CGlock, it locks the rear part of the seatbelt in place and actually does a pretty good job of holding you in.

Cheers,
BJ

Tequipment one is £1200 ish from a dealer. Cage, harnesses, all sundries, fitted inc vat knocking on the door of £2500 from opc. Safety, priceless. And for everything else in life, visa.

Have a cg lock. Found my upper body sliding around a bit on Saturday. Will eat a mars bar a day in the interim.
