So the OH flew in from Dubai this morning. They were stacked up queueing for landing at Manchester and as they circled she saw aan oval racetrack with a figure of 8 through the middle. It was in the countryside with a lake nearby. I found High Edge at Buxton on Google maps but she says it wasn't that one. So what was it?

Suspect it is Buxton she is thinking of.

23 was in use this morning, so Emirates would have stacked at DAYNE, which is centred over the Cat and Fiddle pub. Most likely Buxton.

Lee Wood autograss track might have a figure of eight in the middle, the google maps picture is quite old.

Off topic, but where does one start to find out this sort of information about airports and such procedures? Always fascinated me how/ where/ why an airport would do what it does in operation.

I look at www.flightradar24.com to see what's flying over, where it's going, its height and speed and so on - and you can see the flightpath of the plane you click on (including if it is circling), as well as speed, heading, height, type of plane and flight route and so on.

You can also choose a date and time on that site, and it will run quickly from that point, so you could see the flightpath of the flight the OP referred to if we know when it was 'in the area' and have the flight number for example.

There was at least one flight circling over Warrington/Widnes late this afternoon, I noticed.

But I'm also keen to find out the information that Cheadle Hulme refers to smile .
