Spent the weekend cleaning the car, short trip out in the evening sun and the steering started to 'complain' on the way home. Nursed it back but when I parked her there was fluid leaking from the O/S front under the car. Checked the power steering level and it was empty. The leak is from the outside end of the steering rack rubber gaitor. All the hoses seem ok. Any ideas what is required to fix? Is it likely to be the rack or just seals?

Sounds like a rack seal has gone, you will probably find that the boot is full of fluid. You probably want to do a bit of searching around on here as there have been a number of threads about rack rebuilds over the years. Its not a job I have had to do so I can't really advise, but people seem to have had wildly varying degrees of success with various re-builders and DIY jobs.

Thanks Tanguero, I`ll get the gaitor off at the weekend. Are the seals easy to replace?

Just got mine refurbished by Kiley & Clinton in Birmingham after it started leaking. They are decent guys and provided excellent service. Searched around for good reviews and ended up driving from The Netherlands to Birmingham just to drop off the rack :-)

OK, thanks for the recommendation, but I plan to fix closer to home if possible.
