I have had this for a week now. It feels like someone has punched me in the jaw. It is really painful to bite with my rear right molars.

Should I see a dentist or a doctor?

I've got £5 that says it's a dental abcess.

The thing is, the pain feels like it's coming from my jaw hinge or muscle, rather than my teeth.

Dentists don't just deal with teeth, they will be able to offer advice about jaw problems IF it isn't a tooth abscess.

It's possible. I have all my wisdom teeth EXCEPT for the lower right, which has never come through.

Does it feel like it crunches a bit or jars when you open your mouth wide?

I recently had a really sore jaw and intermittant tooth ache around my molars.
I had it pegged as an abscess or a filling but turns out I've been grinding my teeth at night.

Had a mouth guard made up and its been a lot better.
Worth going and having an xray just to be sure smile

We had a Porsche driving, laddy lecturer at dental school who was always saying that an aching jaw in females was often accompanied by bruising of the soft palate hehepaperbag

He said that they have to wait until it causes problems multiple times before he can refer for surgical removal. The pain has subsided recently and he said I should take painkillers and see how it goes. This wisdom tooth has been in this position for 25 years, after all!
