Does anyone know if you can get a replacement vacuum advance for the Ford distributor fitted to the Essex engine as the one on my 3000S is not working as the diaphragm has perished. Mind you it still seems to be running OK.

Mine is not connected (vacuum wise)thinking of taking it off to "tidy things up" but would things inside flop around without it?

Vaccuum advance is for economy in light throttle/cruise conditions. IF you disconnect the vacuum canister the rotating points plate needs to be locked, when the canister is good a really hard suck will rotate the points plate, no canister=floppy plate. Probably wise to fix/retain it for day to day use.

Considering they were all designed for leaded fuel anyway, you mght not need the vac advance. My 2.8 Wedge runs better without it on premium unleaded....

As 'other tim' says, just make sure the plate can't move (if canister still attached, its spring will keep the plate set, hopefully....) and just block off the carb end, a small bolt in the pipe works quite well.

Thanks for all the replies. With the vacuum advance still fitted the plate can't move so I'll keep it as it is as it's running fine. I just thought if you could get a replacement it may have been worth fitting.

Yeah, I think even at worst case it's just going to be a bit heavier on the fuel. I didn't notice any MPG decline for the 2.8 from with to without for example. (and it does work when connected, I checked)

And there it was gone....

Access to dizzy clamp bolt now much easier (or is my dizzy fitted 60 degees out?), vac advance was virtually touching r/h rocker cover.
