Got an irritating squeak/squeal/chirp coming from front driver's side wheel that I need to diagnose.

It started a couple of month's back but was only noticeable at low speed, but now it does it all speeds (either that or I notice it more now that I'm driving round with windows open in warm weather). It stops when I brake.

First thought was the brake pads/disks, but they are still well within limits. Could it be a wheel bearing? Hub? Badly aligned pads? Any suggestions appreciated.

Is the anti rattle clip for the brake pads missing?
Also check the dust shield hasn't been bent and is catching.

Jack it up spin the wheel and listen, if its the bearing you might be able to feel play in the wheel and feel a roughness when spinning it. Otherwise spin the wheel, listen and trace the sound. smile

Is it a split rim? I had a squeaky wheel diagnosed on an Audi tt that the garage had in for a wheel bearing. They assumed they'd damaged something, so replaced the bearing again, then the housing and hub, all at thier expenses, then found that after swapping wheels front to back in desperation, it was one wheel with about 8 of the split rim bolts loose!!
Quite a common problem on the Audi bbs split rim wheels it seems.

But my money is on squeaky brakes. My mondeo is a pain for it!
