A friend of mine has decided that for his 30th he wants us all to do a ‘Top Gear Challenge’ style event. Basically teams of 3 or 4 go out, buy a car for as little as possible and decorate it in whatever way they see fit. We then drive somewhere and carry out specific challenges along the way. This is a what car thread with a bit of a difference because at the end we will be weighing them in so I’m looking for something cheap but quite big. I was thinking of Sierra’s, Omega’s, Vectra’s etc.

The challenge is in August and as much as I would like to buy the car now the OH has told me she doesn’t want some crap on the drive for the next 5 months. Any suggestions on what will take us a long way with little drama, be hysterical to look at and cheap as a train journey?

Budget? Destination? Tasks?

I'd recommend a Subaru Legacy. Long legged, reasonably fast, and capable of a bit of mud-plugging at a stretch.

Was going to do something similar with a group of friends but with a twist - each team had to buy a car for another team, not themselves. This meant we would go all out to find the most hateful piece of crap for the other guys to endure. Obviously certain rules would apply i.e. no death traps, must have enough seats etc.

It's still something we want to do, but we're currently all skint!

If you do it, please document it on here.

My 306 is worth about £306, but you won't have any TG style hilarious breakdown moments because it has been quite reliable. Sorry.

I think we may end up decorating eachothers cars but nothing has really been finalised yet. I will put the whole excursion on here when it happens. In terms of budget, as cheap as possible. £100/£200 that sort of region - I am talking the lowest of the low here! Mileage we can't decide on. He wants to do Cardiff which is only 200 miles but with an interesting detour, I would however like to go further afield as it seems a lot of fuss for 200 miles but we shall see.

Big old Merc?, not sure you'd get one though for your budget.

As for making the trip a bit more of a challenge, Lands End to John O'Groats? Then to nearest auction house and use proceeds for bus fare home? (the way fuel prices are going make sure you empty the tank before auction)

Start at lands end and get as far North as you can on a single tank then find auction house and spend the money from the sales on ale and a bus fare home.

Volvo, Jag or Merc would be on my list.

From some other threads on here regarding the excessive cost of buying cars on the continent, you could aim to buy a few choice motoring morsels, drive them over to somewhere suitable and sell them at a profit using the proceeds at whichever house of ill repute your money is welcomed at.

Bought a mkII Mitsubishi Space runner Turbo, seduced by the Evo 6 engine, I knew they were rare but after not being able to get any front brake disc's unless I paid £250 for them, I realised I had made a massive mistake. and after that the sliding side door stuck half way open...so on and so on.

get something old and/or easy to fix... or get an AA man to follow you on your trip with a horrible car in tow should any of yours fail smile

Enjoy
