turbo refurb or turbo upgrade time???
Discussion
Hi all, My turbos have been sent off to universal turbos for a refurb as one is smoking rather alot.
My dilema is should i bother or should i upgrade to the roller bearing t25 spec?
My car is running maximum safe boost so i cant raise it, so if i do get the roller bearing type will i really see much benifit or would it be a bit of a waste of time??
Cheers

if you upgrade, go to the GT25RS rather than try to modify the T25's... the design of the entire turbo is much better and you should see gains everywhere including spool.
Very expensive option next to refub though as its a whole new turbo at 1200 a side.
edited to say,
decide on the end spec you want and spec your turbos accordingly... if you only ever want 400bhp then stick with a refurb and slight upgrade to you T25's as they will do that... if you want 500bhp get the GT25RS.... just bear in mind that over 430-450bhp cost escalate massivelly on the 3L (think its 370-400bhp on the 2.5?).

Hi Andy, Thanks for the input. not sure on power at the mo. was tuned to 380 but realized car was hiting the over boost when driven hard. so had to lower the boost slightly. Its been running at that, for a year now but not sure how much power those cast pistons can put up with. My aim realy is to spool up quicker to increase tourqe(spelling) hopefuly.Very expensive option next to refub though as its a whole new turbo at 1200 a side.

As Andy says, there will be a huge difference between the T25's and the GT25RS's. If you think you will want to do the upgrade at some point, now is the time if you can stretch to the difference.
Ask Universal for a quote though as I don't think they are as expensive as that, Andy. I was quoted £675 plus vat each late last year, with them keeping my old T28's in exchange.
Also, make sure you think about what power you want, as even with GT25's, Universal will still spec the wheels to match.
Regards
Graham

not much benefit on a roller bearing core - you will get a slightly better spool up
probably better to get some bigger compressor wheels fitted and a remap
Gadge will bigger compressor wheels slow spool up at all??probably better to get some bigger compressor wheels fitted and a remap
Steve
why not fit a pair of 3.0 turbo's ?

yes a little

thats what i have got gadge T25's are 3L turbo's.
i spoke to universal today and they recomend upgade mine to include cutting back the veins and bigger compressor wheel. So thats what ive gone with.
While on the phone he asked if i'd had a boost hose pop off at all. which i did have happen some time ago now. Turns out this is more than likly the reason for the turbo been in abad way! So learn something today.

i think you will find the 2.5 and 3.0 use different versions of the T25
Gadge, the 2.5L cars were fitted with a turbo that is half T25 and half T2.the 3L cars were fitted with T25 turbos(M400 with T28's).
thats why the 2.5L cars are so responsive, the turbos spool up quicker!
My turbos that i'd fitted to mine came from a 3L and are now being uprated futher.

I think your both on the same page..most people refer to the 2.5 as T25's..even though it is a hybrid and different to the 3.0l T25's..i am interested in how much power u can get from these 3.0l T25's when modified, they seem to max out at 390-400bhp on the 3.0l cars as stock, they cant seem to hold much more than 1 bar..

Hi Chris, These turbos were holding more than 1bar last time i had it tunned. the limiting factor was the cars overboost which is i think is set to 1.4 bar.steve
