1999 TVR Chimaera Diff Noise
Discussion
Hi Guys,
I'm new to this forum and TVR ownership. Anyway I have just bought a 99 Chimaera 400 and am a bit concerned by some evil groaning noises from the diff when pulling away from rest with some lock on which goes away above 5mph,could be a tight LSD?? Also it does not sound to clever in reverse. Any ideas Gents?

You must seem like Billynomates without any replies!
Sounds like you have a problem, mine and others I have driven have not had what you describe.

He's done mine and plenty of others.

Your problems may be the result of the wrong oil being used in the past.
It's essential to use a limited slip oil containing a specific additive package thats vital to the correct operation of a plated limited slip differential.
Groaning is typical of plate noise which can often be more pronounced in reverse.
Even a healthy limited slip diff can exhibit a small about of plate noise in reverse, however it should not be excessive.
The excessive noise you describe can sometimes be resolved by simply changing the oil for a fresh good quality limited slip oil.
Before you condemn the diff to an expensive rebuild try replacing the current oil with something like Millers CRX LS 75w140 NT.
It's not uncommon for an oil change to significantly quieten a noisy LSD.
Obviously no oil can ever repair worn components, if the noises continue after the oil change then you will be looking at a rebuild.
But for the cost of an oil change compared with a rebuild it's well worth a try.

Thanks for the replies Guys. Have been underneath the car today and can safely say that the diff is past its best. Loads of backlash and excessive bearing lift at both output flanges. Looking back through the service history it would seam that it has had a history leaks from the pinion seal....
Will let you know how I get on.
