Flicking through CAR mag, I spotted that the Mk7 Golf GTi [as in petrol, 217hp] will do 47mpg - that's pretty awesome and good news for future performance cars right? smile

By the time that boy comes out I doubt very much 217bhp will be considered to be a performance car in a hatch. Would they be purposely restricting performance to gain mpg figures?

Who knows? It's in the future, it may even be capable of time travel.

It doesn't deserve the totals of HOT Hatch with 217bhp warm maybe that's all.
Sure it will be a great all rounder but direct rivals are 276-285bhp ... Um if your a petrol head you'd follow the POWER

Plus, in reality, it won't get over 35 mpg.

Rubbish will it. A lot of 2.0 diesels struggle to get 47. If it was to get anywhere near this figure you'd may aswell drive a 1.4 version as you'd have to drive it painfully slow, it'd be pointless having the 217hp.

when do any of the manufacturer claims ever come true, I have a 118 bmw auto returns 40 mpg, listed at 55-60..

The price of diesel as it is may as well get a 30 mpg turbo petrol..

Golf R handles that, the GTI isn't meant to be a supercar is it.

Regardless, 217bhp, 50mpg is good, noone asked for comparisons; obviously there are quicker cars, that's not the point of the thread is it.

Ok the R does that but at a price 30% more than the competition

217bhp is exactly the same amount of power now that it was forty years ago and that it will be in forty years' time...

Impressive numbers, but I'll eat my seatbelt if the average owner averages 47mpg out of one.

My 14 year old Fiat Coupe with a remap and 260bhp can manage 44mpg on a ridiculously boring motorway pootle.

Technology has not really moved on much in 14 years!!!

47mpg for the boring commute, foot down 217bhp action for the weekend. It's nice to have the option isn't it, a 1.4 doesn't give you that!

This has got to be good news, my 12 year old 200hp BMW 328 will only do 31ish mpg no matter how careful I drive - that's progress!

Aye 44 on a run maybe, there's a big difference between that and overall average mpg though.

This is just hilarious. People claiming that a hatch with under 250hp is dull.

Well, it will be, because it's a lardy dullbucket. But lack of power isn't the problem; sheer mass and 'economy-orientated' i.e. long gearing is - although the latter is also partly necessary to blunt the effect of high power in a FWD hatch format.

Pick your compromises, people...

The 47 will only happen at 60 on a dry, flat, empty motorway when there is no wind. Tonight I achieved the 40 mpg BMW figure for a 330i coming back from Leeds to London, so it is possible. Just. I have to point out as this is Ph that the journey to Leeds Involved an a and b road detour resulting in 29 on the way there.

It's not infeasible to have a very very powerful car that gets pretty decent fuel economy.

Porsche 918 Spyder - 718hp. 94 imperial mpg. (Book figures)

Just not at the same time.

+1 200 bhp can be a very quick car or a pretty mundane one. It all depends on the weight. Example my mk3 MR2 has "only" 185bhp and 200lb/ft and it goes like a scolded cat! Simply because its very light and RWD.
