Shelby creates mad 1,100hp Mustang for New York

Shelby 1000: the Mustang for those who feel the 650hp GT500 is too slow...

This moderately humble-looking Mustang is Shelby American's most powerful vehicle yet and is to get its public debut at the New York motor show next week. Called the Shelby 1000, and putting out either 950hp, or 1,100hp in track-only guise, it's been created to mark exactly 50 years since Carroll Shelby created an icon by dumping a big Ford V8 into a humble AC.

Taking the new Mustang GT500 as a base (with 650hp already, hardly the most obvious candidate for a power hike), Shelby strips the 5.4-litre V8 block, adds new conrods, crankshaft and pistons, replace the supercharger and uprate the cooling and exhaust systems.

Handling isn't forgotten, with new suspension uprights, anti-roll bars and bushes fitted, while the brakes get four-piston calipers up front and four-piston jobs out back. There are aero mods, too, with a new bonnet, front splitter and rear diffuser among them.

Should you fancy one, Shelby is making a limited production of Shelby 1000s, starting at $149,995. But you'll first have to buy a 'base' GT500 and give it to them as a donor car...

I just love the instrument pods on the windscreen pillar. They're conveniently placed to take your eye out and crush your skull.

This is not really my bag, but anything that wheelies on standard tyres (ie not mahoosive drag slicks) off the line has to be interesting!

It has to be borderline uncontrollable on the road!

Those rear tyres look way too skinny for even the standard Cobra power!

As nice as it is, what's the point? All that power, it will just spin or TC will be like a continuous addition to the Dash illumination!

As has been pointed out elsewhere, and now admitted by Shelby American, that wheelie shot is a fake..

I like it, except, c'mon, who shopped the 'wheelie' image? If you're going to try and create a media conversation starter don't get the intern to fake the shot.

As cool as this is, but you got to buy a GT500 and then pay them another $149000 on top? Someone is taking the pith i think

I like it, just enough power and looks good.

Shame about the crap photoshop skills, but the car itself is ace.

Let's be honest, it's not exactly hard to spot, no drop in the front suspension, no squat in the rear, still light visible through the rear tyre tread.. It's a shockingly bad bit of photoshop work!

I test drove a looney Marcos Coupe once, I believ it had a supercharged Mustang engine in it. Don't know what the power was. But it definately was too much for me.

Told the guy selling it that I didn't like the drab olive green paintwork.

Fine if you live on a drag strip, not really all that useful on bumpy roads in North Yorkshire.
