With fuel seemingly increasing weekly at best round here, I think a proper Econo box is required.

Since PH has all the answers, what are the opinions on the Aygo
thing? Including all the other brand derivatives.

Any known issues?

I hear the clutches are weak and can cost £600 to replace.

The purchase price for used ones is also very high IMHO for hair shirt motoring.

Apart from that cheap tax and the potential for 60 mpg is appealing.

Take a look at all the usual suspects.

I've run a C1 from new to 20,000 miles. No clutch issues yet. Very cheap to run, though very basic.

As it will purely be a commuter I'm not after much more than economy and reliabilty really.

Why is the clutch so dear to replace?

Had a 107 hire car for a fortnight. Loved it.

Very basic, but we know that otherwise we wouldnt be looking.

Sounds good. Handles well. Pretty nippy upto 30 (1st tops out at 35, 2nd at 60 wink )

If i remember correctly i got 350-400 miles to a tankfull, wringing its neck the full tme.

Cant comment on parts / reliability. biggrin

Possibly due to the packaging, our KA has a clutch that is a PITA to change the earlier ones were simple.

Approx 35 miles return journey.

A commuter bike is something that I have long dwelt over, but I have serious concerns over income loss should anything nasty occur. If that wasn't a concern,I wouldn't want to have to ride in the depths of winter- been there and done that thanks.

I've an old Golf GT TDI, decent allrounder, good fuel economy. It's been very reliable, quite hard to fault as a econobox commuter.

Currently running a 52 plate KA that's not brilliant in fuel and needs some money spending on it. Was just trying to see if buying a newer ,more efficient motor was a valid way forward.
I cannot see fuel returning to anything like sensible again TBH.

35 miles round trip would only amount to ~8500 miles a year commuting.

Personal mileage on the top, if you arent going to pass 12k a diesel isnt worth the additional pruchase price (common theory is 12k is the breakeven taking in to account greater price of diesel and additional purchase price)

I think this would be squewed further if it wasnt to be your only car, as then the additional tax/MOT/insurance needs pricing in to the break even.

Surely the answer to everything is MX5 smile

or the Other answer and one I'll be looking at for a run around is the K11 Micra up to 02 plate i think.

I've never driven the aygo, etc but a friend has one and always complains about how noisy it is.

Our 06 plate is returning more than 40mpg, and currently needs c£500 spending on 2 tyres, a good service, a pair of rear springs and a new clutch slave cylinder (which means changing the clutch while its all apart).

It hurts dropping that much money on a cheap car but should keep it from needing anything but oil for another 2 or 3 years.

How's the body, has it dissolved yet? Those things rot very well indeed. My GF had one, I won't go near another.

Ah, never mind. I was going to suggest buying a pug diesel of some description. 205, 106, 306.
You'll get 60 mpg out of all of them and can buy one for £700.

My Ex had an Aygo and thought it was great. She's not the sort who'd be after a "driver's car" so I can't comment on it, but it seemed OK.
