I used to hate the idea of a diesel convertible, I mean why on earth would someone want to something that makes listening to 'that engine' unavoidable!

Thing is, I'm now warming to the idea, what with fuel prices getting crazy. I figure, if I can't afford to run an E46 M3 cab, I might as well get an E46 330d cab - performance wise I guess it's pretty close to a 330i and with a re-map, 250hp and a ton of torque would mean swift progress while still getting high 30mpg.

After owning high-reving and straight-6 petrol cars, the thought of getting a diesel doesn't exactly fill me with joy, but getting the roof down on a day like today might just make the hit a little bit easier smile

So, the list goes: E46/93 BMW diesel 6 or Audi A4 3.0TDi [not sure the 4 cylinder versions would cut it]. I wish the Alfa Spider 2.4JTD was a better car than it is, cos it looks so so so good!

Be good to hear your experiences with diesel cabs smile

BMW I6 diesels dont sound too bad IMO, still a bit of a nice sound going on and besides with the roof down you're going to need TVR-esque exhausts to even hear any engine at speed, let alone hear enough to be bothered by diesel clatter. As I say though, at least having 6 cylinders makes it better and smoother.

Convertible diesel?

getmecoat

Could you not just get a smaller, lighter open roof vehicle? Something like an MR2 mk3 or MG TF would get high 30's MPG easily enough without having to sacrifice on performance.

TBF, if you need a larger 4 seater cabrio, I think the diesel style of power delivery would suit the more relaxed nature of an open 4 seater quite well.

I did forget to write...although cutting the budget on the car by a third and buying an S2000 is probably a better idea, spare cash for the petrol then smile

A diesel Audi A4 cab [in a rather nice red] passes my apartment everyday - it looks damn good. Although a Gallardo Spyder also passes each day, which puts things into perspective smile

How about a VW Beetle 1.9 TDi Cabrio? wink

Seriously though i'd buy the 330Cd over an A4 Cab.

I'd get an S2000 and spend the money you save on fuel, like you suggested. If I have to choose from the other 2 I'd choose the BMW.

Like many cars that people think its cool to hate a diesel convertible has its place. They are for the man who places value on aural pleasure but for people who want range, low co car tax and the ability to get sunburn on the m6 then they are perfect.

I've gone for one of those Mercedes 2 yr deals on a SLK 250 CDI

will be my first diesel and thought I'd give it a try - can put it through my business as well which is a bonus.

Hopefully it won't sound to awful smile

I must admit I didn't really 'get' diesel convertibles.
But then again, if you want economical open top motoring - why not ! My best mate just bought an A4 2.0tdi - which I was rather impressed with.

330Cd's cost eleventybillion pounds anyway, people pay absolutely BONKERS money for them. You could buy a 330Ci instead for thousands of pounds less money *and* you wont get that diesely noise with the roof down.

I've actually noticed that an E90 325d covertible can be had for almost the same price as late e46 330ds
