Blinking 'eck, that's steep.

How about sticking with a 1.1 205 until you've (hopefully) gained a years NCD?

try Tesco motor insurance... www.tesco.com/finance - or give Bell Direct a call (they do NCB accelerator plans).

Alternatively, look for a different car... ?

And they wonder why so many people drive around with no insurance. (and no, I'm not suggesting you do that).

I got quoted £4000 for a 1.3 locost third party only by a specialist insurer. OK I'm 19 and I've got six points but still.

Can you get an old Land Rover, or MG Midget or something? Run it on classic insurance for a year, then buy something properly sporty at 18 with a year's NCB.

Get your mother to insure it but in the meantime get your own policy on the slowest oldest car in your family. As said above the 1 years ncd is worth a bundle at your age. Saying that though - my insurance with no ncd at 29 is still 1200.

[usual own-car recommendation] Fiat Cinquecento Sporting [/usual own-car recommendation]

Good ones can be had for well under £2k, fun, feel quick, and group 3 insurance. And probably won't fall apart like a 205.

Regarding classic car insurance....I once insured my old 2.8 Capri on a classic policy and didn't gain any NCD for the year. Also, i had to have use of another car (which I did, my 350i wedge)

sjg - good call. I had a Cinq Sporting (or Cheeky-cento as the misses dubbed it) once upon a time. Had been used as a second car / shopping trolley, was immaculate with full Fiat history... then it got the Abarth kit... bits kept on getting added to it until it ended up with a full roll cage, strengthened body, 150bhp Punto GT 1.4 Turbo engine... and a whole host of goodies... great little track day car.

Found it was cheaper to replace worn parts with performance ones, which was the real bonus!

I thought about that after I posted about classic insurance; however I also realised that you won't get classic insurance when you're aged 17 anyway. It *is* cheaper to insure a 'specialist' car though - JWH on the Evo forum has just got an old lightweight Landie at age 17 because it was cheap to insure.

How did you get the GT engine to fit? The tiny cramped engine bay will take a 1242cc 8v without much modification (it's just 10mm taller) but even the 1242cc 16v won't fit without a new plenum. Can't say I've spent too long staring at GT engines, but they seem pretty damn big to fit, especially with an intercooler and larger radiator to pack in there as well. Details would be much appreciated!

I wouldn't worry about what your first car is. You could end up with a yugo zavasta and you will still have more fun than you ever imagined.

Just spend some time checking different cars on the insurance quotes system and get whats going to be cheapest.

Stick with something under 1.3 litre engine capacity and not only will you save cash on insurance, you will also learn the art of "momentum".

You are still going to scare yourself many times by your lack of ability in your first year of driving, even with less than 45bhp.

This is a bit expensive but I would imagine they would take a couple of hundred less (from exchange & mart)

sjg - GT engine fits with difficulty...

If you are interested in modifying the Cinq I suggest you contact Middle Barton Garages or UAD www.uadmotorsports.co.uk

In hindsight, it would have been cheaper (and easier) to get a tuned 1.3 in there... would have been just as much fun and a lot less hassle to keep running.

oh, and you can get the Punto 6 speeder 'box into the baby too...

Punto GTs> Spoke to a mate of mine last night, his GT already has a huge spec (300bhp!) but its off now being bored out to 1.6 litres, and having ANOTHER turbo fitted. Nutter. Thatll be a 1.6 TWIN turbo Punto GT pushing lots of BHP

Classic suggestion... Mini's... unless you throw money at them you'll be getting a 1.0... mine cost about 400 to insure when I was 17... with the likes of Privilege a Stage 1 kit would be no hassle (kit is only a few hundred notes) (if Privilege insure 17yr olds?)... as suggested above use a web quote and try loads of cars, you'll be surprised, apparentyl simialr cars costing a lot less... also phone quotes always less than internet ones, don't give up.
