Couple of questions.

Car is Nissan xtrail, done 19k miles , 2 years old and serviced to schedule.

Had problems with clutch pedal stuck in down position, wouldn't come up and car stalled. Car wouldn't start until clutch manually pulled up.....happened all at once with no previous gradual problem. Any ideas on what it is?

Garage has indicated clutch not covered under warranty but surely a car with 19k on it shouldn't fail unless there is a fault with a part and should be covered......or am I being naive. In 22 years of driving, I've never had a clutch problem so pretty sure it's not my crap driving!

Any help/suggestions appreciated.

Cheers

A clutch can be knackered in 1000 miles depending how its driven.

But driven normally (I know everyone would say that) it should go in 19k though, should it?

As a general rule of thumb, clutches that are worn out but show no other faults are not covered. Failure of a part of the operating system normally is. Your problem doesn`t sound like a worn out clutch, more likely to be either the master or slave cylinder.

Master cylinder would be my guess too.

Obviously they'll try and get out of paying for it whatever it is.

If its mechanical failure you should be ok, if its worn out obviously not

Cheers guys,

Assuming its the master cylinder, how would I prove defect and not wear and tear? I would have though it not unreasonable for this to last 3 years or 19k miles or again am I being naive smile

Car was fine up until the breakdown and showed no signs of any problems.

If it is the master cylinder, it will be covered. These are not wear and tear items. Also it won`t involve removing the transmission so should be a quick and easy repair.

Thanks again.....they have had the car for 2 days and said they were taking the gearbox out tomorrow to look at the clutch!

In which case it`s not the master cylinder.

Will be something inside the bellhousing: the clutch itself, the slave cylinder or the bearing/fork arrangement.

Keep us posted when the box is out.

Could be the slave cylinder, they are often in the gearbox these days

Quick update.....was the slave cylinder which has leaked onto the clutch.

Covered under warranty.

Why? Dealers get paid for warranty work. If it was fred in a shed with his own warranty on it, I could imagine it.
