That's the best way I could word the title im afraid...

Anyway, the day before yesterday, i rang a certain BMW dealer to enquire about a car. Spoke to the salesman, advised him its the right spec im looking for and showed my interest. I wanted a rough part-ex value and he promised to call me back within an hour or two. He also has my e-mail address.

3 days on, no call, no e-mail. Nothing even explaining his lack of calling me back, being busy or whatever.

That simple thing has pretty much stopped me spending £15k with that dealership.

Another piss boiler, is that i work nights sometimes. I'll send an enquiry through their website, with specific instructions to e-mail me. (I'll post my vehicle details, questions etc on their form). What happens? They fking ring me up. I've even had them ring me up, when i actually tick the 'contact me by e-mail not by phone' box on their website.

My arugment here is that if someone cannot manage something so simple as this, how the hell can i trust them to get an expensive car purchase right?

All cars i've bought have been from a dealer who can call me back when they say, follow simple instructions, and not treat me like a sheep.

Am i being stupidly petty here??? Or should i be chasing around after these people?

No, not stupid. I have walked from deals in the past for similar reasons. And I've booked my service for Monday next week at the dealer I bought my latest car from, even though they are in Sheffield and I'm in Manchester. That's how good I thought they were, and there are also 4 nearer garages (Skoda) that I could go to.

You don't get much at a BMW dealership for £15k so you're not doing yourself any favours on that high horse!

If I was selling something I'd want to know the potential buyer was genuine before I put much work in, if I couldn't speak to that person I'd assume he/she was a timewaster.

I have heard very good things about that particular Skoda dealer. Some less good things about another multisite operation including Leeds.

Whatever it is at 15k probably has better margins for the dealer than a lot of the higher value new cars they sell, and whatever the case is it all adds up.

Had this happen once before, just a totally rude and inappropriate manner of speaking(before negotiation stages) so didn't bother continuing the deal. I think the 'dealer using it as a company car' is probably the cause to a few of these cases, in my case it was a fairly high end car at a volume brand dealership so chances are they were keen to keep use of the thing for themselves for a while.

Probably doesnt want your part ex and doesnt want to get into a discussion with you about the insultingly low p/ex figure he'd offer as he knows you want the car he's selling.

He probably figures that as you want the car you'll be back sooner or later.

If you want to put the boot in ring the dealer principal, tell them you've bought elsewhere because the salesman couldnt be bothered to make a simple phone call.

I wouldn't spend my money there either. There are plenty of other dealers that would be more than willing to sell you a car. I know family members that have travelled from Inverness to Glasgow or Aberdeen to buy a car due to the poor service experienced at their local dealers. They seem to forget that you are a customer and think that they are doing you a massive favour by selling you a car.

I've experienced similar from main dealers but independant dealers I've never had any problems with them ignoring emails, calls etc..

OP, no it's fair enough, if they don't want to do this then what will they be like if you have a problem with the vehicle?

Well, at the end of yesterday he rang me, offered me a fair price for part-ex, so i thought id give him a chance. He seemed nice on the phone and just assumed he had been busy.

He promised to call me back to inform me of the service dates and number of owners.

Guess what i'm still waiting for 27 hours later....

That's the nail in the coffin then laugh

The margin on a £15k car will possibly be more than a brand new car... So yes, £15k is very important to them.

It also buys you a lot of car, BMW or not.

Even though the PX price he`s quoted is reasonable?

Don`t cut your nose off to spite your face.......

Have you considered he might have more customers than just you to look after?

You are buying a car and unfortunately if you buy from a dealer you sometimes have to deal with the morons who work at these establishments

Just concentrate on the product (the car) and try not to let personalities get in the way

As a car salesman my feedback:

- March is an incredibly busy time, but he still should call you back.

- On any 'lead' if theres a phone number the salesman will call it, you could be a mystery shop, failing a mystery shop
hurts a salesman financially.

-I ve had customers come in wanting info/ deals on factory order new model cars I cant deliver this month, politely defer them to next month.

- The car might not be in yet or is awaiting prep from their workshop, if the prep is too much they might just auction it, most dealers will have cars on the web before they even come in.

- Customers actually in the showroom are a priority, for every 5 people you talk to exclusively over the phone 4.5 of these enquirys go nowhere even if you have done 30 finance quotes and sent off 400 photos..
