I thinking of downgrading from a 10mb D60 to the new Nikon 1 or similar micro slr's

I dont do pro photography really, just like to do a nice snap, and its more portable. (IMO)
So is the '1' PR hype or actually any good?

I don't get the size argument for these types of camera. Yes they are smaller than a dslr but they still won't fit in your pocket like a compact, therefore you might as well just stick with a dslr.

The body is a little more portable, but depending on the lens it quickly becomes D60-like,

Funnily enough I have seen some pros are using them! One chap who was required to provide time-lapse of construction work in big mail order distribution centre bought a whole sack of them to liberally sprinkle around a huge warehouse.

When they were first announced they looked like a bit of a fad (remember APS anyone). But it's true that they're good value for the technology they're packed with.

Having bought a P7000 compact Nikon last year for those snaps and lighter travelling, I think the 1s are a useful alternative. But I would go and try them out, because they might still be painfully slow in use in anger compared to an SLR - and that's primarily what frustrates me with any compact. But these days an iPhone is just as good and just as quick to use!

The body would fit in a pocket I think. I do have to travel REALLY light sometimes, and whilst click and go's are quite impressive these days, the zoom technology leaves them behind for what I take. And click n go's don't offer decent depth of field or manual focus (unless im behind the times?)

eg
(not my bag) but you can see a DSLR a few pants socks and tshirts, and you start to wish you had a Nikon j1 for the extra space - the body could go in your coat pocket.

Do you mean lots of DOF or shallow? They are naturally very good at 'lots', and as long as you use the right aperture - can easily do shallow.

Taken with Canon S95 f2.8:

impressive! whats the longest zoom like? Yes, I like v.short DOF.

in a "where im at" kinda way - this is my idea of a snap.

I wouldn't recommend the Nikon.

They have very small sensors and controls that are aimed towards the point and click crowd.

If you want a smaller camera (than an SLR) look at the Micro Four Thirds cameras (Olympus/Panasonic) or at the Sony Nex 3/5n/7.

The M4/3 cameras have a great range of lenses and decent sensors.
The Sony's have larger sensors (APS-C, comparable with DSLRs like the Canon EOS 7D) but a poorer range of lenses.

Also using fairly cheap adaptors, the M4/3s and Sony's can be modified to take almost any lens.

I sold my EOS 1D and am switching to the Sony NEX 7 as I am sick of huge cameras.

sony looks good, but a jump from £385 to £1000 is a bit steep..

The Nex-5N is closer in price to the Nikon. It's also the smallest Nex body, but you still get a proper APS-C sized sensor - which means better low light performance, more DOF, and it's easier to use legacy lenses (more usable crop factor). I'm loving mine smile

I quite like the look of the Pentax on paper as an alternative to the Nikon 1.

Shirley you would apply that to M42? Bit of a MkII Escort with FWD instead of the true classic?

By the time I bounded onto the SLR scene in 1979/80 M42 was relegated to the likes of Practica and other aged eastern stuff. Agreed it's more universal than K-mount but in the 80/90s not only Pentax but all the independents (not just lens makers like Sigma, Tamron and Vivitar before they lost the plot) but lesser camera-makers like Ricoh and Chinon used K-mount so there will be tons about, good fast glass and even aperture linkage!

Just sold my NEX-5n on ebay (twin lens kit) for £500. It's only the 7 which is expensive, the 5n is just as capable but not as quick to change functions.

I sold it to get the new Olympus u4/3 camera. I also sold my Canon SLR stuff to fund the move, and am more than happy.

Absolutely - could be a shrewd move, with some corking glass to be re-discovered.
