Whats this

anyone know what this is, my boss asked me to have a look at his car as he says it was stalling someone took a hose of this and pluged thwe end with a self tapper and now its fine but wants to know what it is.

Looks like the vac advance to me, which would make sense - if its not working then it would muck up the timing and cause running problems. Blocking it off will make things run better but you wont get the benefit of the advance http://www.camaros.org/pdf/timing101.pdf

If it had a distributor then yes. But it's diesel, and ECU controlled, so no. I would guess it's a vacuum diaphragm operating either an EGR valve, or possibly a flap blocking off the air intake when you switch off the engine (so it doesn't stop to roughly).

Either the diaphragm has split in the bit you've circled, meaning that extra air is leaking in, probably unmeasured by the MAF sensor, and confusing it. Or possibly another fault means it trying to operate EGR or shutoff when it shouldn't, and disconnecting it means it can't.

looks like the turbo boost regulator/wastegate actuator to me
IF if this is a turbo diesel
i am not familiar with this engine.

Yes its a turbo diesel, thought i was just being a bit stupid not knowing what it was but it seems to have a few people foxed
