IIRC last time I looked they were £4-5k for the cheapest ones? Suddenly they're being suggested in pretty much every 'what car under 2k', 1500, and even 1k thread!? When did this happen!? Are they that bad?

They're cheap, but you're far from the first person on here to notice.

My guess is that they have become unpopular due to fuel and oil thirst and realibility seems to some what have decreased as they get older, Shame ad they are still a interesting piece of engineering in my opinion

Probably more correct to say that as they get older a lot of owners are buying them cheap and not really looking after them as they should wink

Nice and interesting cars but there are a lot of other cars I'd prefer for the money.

Could you put an alternative engine in one? If so what is the engine of choice?

I'd be more interested in taking the engine out of one and dropping it in a mk 1 or Mk 2 MX5....

If anything the engine is the cars Achilles heel. If anything you'd be best off putting a different engine in the RX. The whole car as a package is a give away, the motor is just a ticking time bomb.

There was a thread with a chap buying a cheap RX8 (blown engine jobby for £1500) and chucking a vag 1.8t in it. Not the most exciting engine agreed, but cheap as chips and easy to gain.

I know. But I still hanker after an Mx5 with a more powerful engine and a 9k red line. In a body shell like this.

At what year does the tax get silly?

Oh and what goes pop in the engine and is it DIY fixable?

About the same time people stopped bothering to use the search function.

The tax gets silly from 06 models onwards, I think the tax is then £460 a year up from £260. I think they dropped value sharply when they were a few years old and the engine failure and oil issues were all too common. Couple that with low 20's MPG and it becomes cheaper to run something like a Boxster.

Far from it. That's my point.

Demonstrate how to use the search function to pinpoint a specific time, just for the technically challenged amongst us.

Basically this... Mazda have some decent engines. MPS engine in an RX-8 could be (very) good?

I agree, absolutely done to death at this stage, and just goes around in circles.

Google search for : RX-8 pistonheads

Left hand side, change "anytime" to "custom range" and pick your dates.

PH search function is poor. So just use Google...

Any LSx engine. Cosworth YB lumps, VAG 1.8T. Pretty much anything going in them at the moment.

Around about 6 months after I paid a fair price for a 2007 model. Still hurts now..

I was thinking the other day if I wrote my Z4 off for whatever reason and I was left with an intact engine (M54 3.0) would that be an ideal candidate for an RX-8 shell? I think it'd be brilliant personally.. but I don't know if the longitudinal lump would fit.

Decent noise, economy and power.

I believe there is a thread in Readers Rides at the moment where someone is putting a VAG 1.8T engine into one smile

Good idea! One small improvement, instead of putting :

RX-8 pistonheads

put :

RX-8 site: pistonheads.com
(remove the space after the ":")

That way you only get stuff from this site. smile

I'm sure I've seen one that has an LS V8.
