Mk Indy R R1 Build progress.

Was bored so started sorting out all the pics on my mac, and decided to make a brief progress thread for my kit car. Unfortunatly when my iPhone st itself i lost some pictures of the build, but have got most of them here:

This is how the main kit came delivered:

The bare powder coated chassis


shocks


A big pile of bolts ETC


The wishbones/hub carriers


The bodywork (It didn't stay in the house long lol)




Firstly it was to turn the chassis upside down, and fit the floor panel (Yes i went a bot OTT with the rivets!)


Then it was to fit the suspension:





Then the engine came (2008 R1), unfortunately i bought a newer engine than the mounts were designed for so i had to modify the brackets slightly, but then it bolted in nicely. And yes that massive wiring loom was a right pain in the arse to sort out.




Then it was time to fit the fuel tank (25L), Diff, handbrake, and reverse motor:





I then had a rolling chassis, so decided to take it for a walk up the drive:




Then it was time for some bodywork, and was starting to look the part.











Then fitted the dash and dials:




Oh and a video of its first start up, sounds very raw, and very very loud with no exhaust (also got me into trouble with the neighbours )

Thought it was time to ditch the sierra wheels, and get something a bit more modern



And a bit of rubber for them:



The exhaust i made myself, just to silence the engine a bit(to keep the neighbours from killing me), and will be getting a custom one made.




Tidyed the engine bay up a bit, Still a bit more to do, and get a smaller battery.




Made the boot lid


And pretty much how it is now:








Not too much left now, Just need to get a proper exhaust made, cover a few edges/bolts, and it should be time for IVA, and hopefully have it on the road for winter.


Oh and the spec is as follows:

Mk indy R chassis
Sierra LSD
Sierra brakes
2008 Yamaha R1 engine

The engine should be around 190 BHP, and it should weigh around 500KG, so hopefully 380BHP/Ton, so should be more than enough to kill me.

Its also my first kit, and was only 20 when i started building it 18 months ago, so don't think I've done too bad for a first build.

How difficult is a kit like this? I assume its mostly bolt together?

Nicely done, best of luck with the SVA, I had a bit of a nightmare on the way to mine when the gearbox rubbed through the loom and almost torched the car......memories

Has the engine had a lot of work done to it?

My only thought is that 190bhp is likely to be pretty optimistic, the BSB machines are running with 200bhp and a lot of work. A standard 2008 engine is likely be around 170bhp at the crank.

Car looks great though and I'd love to have a go at building one myself in the future, I need a garage first though!

As someone else asked, how hard was it to build?

I'm about the same age as you and I'd love to do something like this, but I have next to no mechanical knowledge. Is it a case of you can learn as you go, or do you actually need to know a bit about what your doing before you begin?

Yes, the majority just bolts/bonds together, But its no caterham, The body panels Etc need quite a bit of filing to get the to fit properly. (I bought a dremel, and was worth every penny).

As for difficulty, if you can use a set of spanners/use a drill, and a bit of common sense, you will be fine. Learning to weld is a great idea (i couldn't before i started)

The wiring was probably the hardest bit to get my head around, but i did make my own loom from scratch(apart from the engine loom which required modifying), but you can buy a loom ready to go.


I think you could be right RE the power output, I've just had another look and it is actually 170BHP. But i think it should still be plenty of power to start with, i can always get a turbo kit if i want more power But considering the most powerful car I've ever driven is a BMW 328CI, id better get used to this first.

Im currently waiting for a tow bar kit to arrive, so i can then get a trailer, and get a proper exhaust made.

Have you had insurance quotes for it yet? Assuming your going to drive it on the road to the track as you must be a similar age to myself if you started the build at 20.

Looks like you have done a good job on the build, would love to do something like this but dont think I would have the balls, I worry I have broke something when I change the oil.

Had mine on a rolling road yesterday. 167bhp.

A little update as it currently stands, almost there, IVA on the 28th of this month so got to get my ass into gear to finish off the last few bits.

Since the last pics its had a fully custom stainless system build, and tided things up, and decided to carpet it to add a bit of luxury to it (audi take note)

Oh and had to change the harness for one with a E mark on it.

The foam around the start button and digidash will "fall off" after IVA, and are only there to satisfy the examiner to hide the highly dangerous edges!

Again the steering shaft pod i made, I'm not really happy with, but should do for IVA.

Looks a tidy car and should go well, hope you get a good guy for your IVA, the one we had was very fair and generally interested in cars but some of them can be a nightmare

Superb build! A bloke on my shift at work has one, think his is a car engine as far as i'm aware but he's wanting to stick a motorbike engine in it!

Look great fun and so so rewarding knowing you built it, albeit from a kit but it's still alot of hard graft!

May I ask how much it cost you to build?

Yes I'm hoping the guy in bristol is a good guy, But I'm going in with the expectation of getting a list of things that need doing to pass.

I believe i have spent the best part of £14K on her so far. I never intended to spend this much, but after i started i just kept spending but its not so bad spread over 2 years.

And I'm sure it will be worth it once its finally on the road
