Hi everyone, i have a rather nice problem... I’m going to have about 8k to spend on a new car soon and i cant decide on what i'd like to get.

I was thinking either:

Megane sport R26
Golf GTI
Civic type R
or possibly a Brera although i know they're not all that quick!

At the moment im most tempted by the R26 as it seems a good all-rounder! But any advice is much appreciated! i will be doing a bit of commuting as well so i think the V6 Brera is out of the question really!

What are you coming out of? Golf GTI mk5 is a very complete allrounder but so competent it can seem a little bland particularly if you're used to rawer cars.

Integra DC5. N/A, high revs, rarer than pretty much anything else mentioned, best handling fwd car you'll get.

Do you need a hatch and a 5 seat family car such as any of these?

Money wise I'd have thought a tidy MK1 Focus RS would be a more sound bet. However there's a very nice array of 2+2 coupes, 2 seater sports cars and rwd saloons at this money too..... would none of them maybe offer something more than a mundane hatchback?

If you were looking at Breras, the best engine to have is the 2.4 JTDm IMO - although you wouldn't describe it as a 'hot hatch' by any means.

From that list i'd have the Golf GTi, although have you also had a look at the SEAT Leon FR 2.0 TFSi 200? Can be had much cheaper. There is also the 2.0 TDi 170 which is also 'rapid' rather than quick, but they can be all easily mapped/tuned.

£8k buys a lot of car. I'd suggest broadening your horizons.

Thanks for all the replies!

i have looked at most of the cars mentioned, I heard from a friend that had a leon Cupra R that they suffer badly from torque steer and that his clio cup 182 was much more fun so i thought its bigger brother would be even better, espicially with the LSD.

Dan i would love a 'Teg but i think the insureance would be too much as im only 21.

I had thought about a nice 3 series but i just think they're a bit boring and bland now unless you get an M3 which is too much for me.

I'm after somthing with 4 seats really that's fun fast and not too expensive to run. i'd like an s2000 but again they're expensive to insure and run!

I've never owned high performance car although i've driven my dad's VX220 on tracks. I'd love one of those but i really need more space and comfort because of the comute.

I wouldn love to buy a ST but i have a bit of a problem with them... i just find them a bit common. i dont want to sound like a snob but i'm just not a fan of Fords! i know they're great cars and have some awesome specs but theyre just not for me.

which 2 seaters would you reccomend? the only saloon i'm really interested in would be a 3 series but i cant afford to run one!

Personally the Golf GTi, but I'd look at Mini Cooper S as well.

I settled for a civic type r for similar money and to be honest it does the job well for what I want and I dont really regret it at all.

I'd maybe like to have tried a 3.0 3 series if a decent one could be found for that money + simialr age, but its probably unlikely

- Only things about the civic are its a 4 seater not 5.
- They are probably not as reliable as some other hondas from the past (although for reliabilty i'd chose it over a VXR, R26 etc...)
- Suspension really is rock hard. Doesnt bother me but I do wonder when passengers get in.

Other than that interior is good, seats great, relatively fast, relatively reliable and IMO looks great.

What will the deprecation be like on an £8k hot-hatch? Rough man-maths would suggest that spending £5k on an M3 with pretty much zero depreciation will allow you to offest the higher insurance premiums against the depreciation of an £8k hot-hatch scratchchin

Worth looking into. £8k is a lot of money to have tied-up in a car at 21, especially when you'll be losing money on insurance.

Maybe have look what you can get for £4-6k and then factor in depreciation v insurance.

Depends on how raw you want the drive to be tbh.

Golf Gti is a very good, sensible all rounder
Meggy R26 is a much better drivers car
DC5 is good, but id say not as good as the DC2
Focus ST has a drink problem & is common as muck
Astra VXR looks great but doesnt drive great has an image problem
Mazda MPS looks dull, drives ok
130i drives great, looks a bit odd

For the record, i absolutely aodre hot hatches (see my profile) and have just bought yet another clio, this time a 197 Cup smile

+1. Fairly rapid as standard, very tuneable (mine is pushing 265bhp now) - actually its the same 2.0 TSi engine as both the Golf GTi and the Leon Cupra, comfortable, nimble (for its size) and has space to spare.

For 8k you'll get a decent pre-facelift example

Brera 3.2 V6 all the way!

Yes, not the fastest but more than quick enough for the UK roads ...

Sounds really lovely and a lovely place to sit aswell. Very stylish interior ... Not the cheapest to run but wow ... They look REALLY great.
