Alfa Romeo 166
Discussion
I have loved these since I was in school
sure it will fall apart, but it has already depreciated like a stone
and honestly, I ask anyone to show me a better looking car for the money
even to sit on my driveway and be driven once a week
pure pornography

They have their common issues and need to be looked after by someone who knows them but they don't fall apart. They are generally pretty well built and don't rust like a W210 or even a E39 from the same era. There are many about with huge mileages.
Cambelts, heater matrix (and gearbox ECU which is under it), thermostats, MAF, suspension bushes and gear linkages are all common things to look at but you can write a similar list for any similar car from the same era.

They're wonderful cars! I had a 164 last year and it was a cracking car, really nice to drive too which I wasn't expecting when I placed my eBay bid.
I would however always go for the Busso V6's, the noise and willingness to rev from that engine is lovely. The 4 pot isn't that much more economical to make it worth it.

My FIL still has my 1999 156 TS and (despite his best efforts) isn't falling apart. The biggest issue with Italian cars is their idiotic driving position. Make the steering reach adjustment longer for Christ's sake!
I've had two 147s and a 156, they felt so weird to drive until you got used to that bloody driving position. I always wanted a 166 V6 but can't do with the position!! Might aswell get a transit! There is nothing wrong with the driving position of either the 164 or 166, I have had both.
166's are really great cars, one of the best looking saloons ever, never mind for 2k, with only the quattroporte up there in my opinion. The interior is also beautifully designed, with the quality of materials easily as good as German stuff. The 166 is a much more solid car than people think.
V6's are best for the full effect but facelift v6's are very rare and 3.2 manuals very sought after. You won't find a more stylish car for 2k that's for sure.
