what fuel do you use?
Discussion
With everyone panicking about fuel, my range says i have 50 miles and i can only find normal unleaded, i'm refussing to run my car on anything but super unleaded so change of plan this weekend, i will wash the car and let it rest until shell v power comes back in.
What fuel do you use? i saw a brand new m5 this morning on my search filling up with normal 95

I choose to use V-Power or Tesco Momentum.
However, there's nothing wrong with running a car on fuel it was designed to run on. It may run better, give better economy, give more power on SuperUnleaded, but your owner manual will tell you the range it's designed for. If you're simply driving your normal motorway commute then the normal unleaded won't do any harm.
You can also simply buy some octane booster from Halfords and pour a bottle in with your peasant-grade unleaded.
However if you're that concerned for your car's wellbeing, I assume you'll want to go out of your way to buy 101/105/110 RON fuel when you go for a fast drive, as that's much better over V-Power than V-Power is over normal unleaded.

Anyway you car wont die if you put 95 in it nor imo will it feel like it has any less power, it may give you slightly less MPG but not by much.... i wouldn't worry and get out in it.....

V Power all the way
I cannot understand people who spend all the money on buying a highly tuned M car then go and stick normal crappy fuel in it!
Although i guess you have no proof that vowed makes the car any faster and it's costing you say 7% more to fill up.I cannot understand people who spend all the money on buying a highly tuned M car then go and stick normal crappy fuel in it!

But the OP was saying he wasn't going to use his car because of the lack of availability of the stuff..... why? In reality on normal roads on average days when its not to extremely hot or freezing cold the effect to my mind is very almost null but it is good knowing your putting the best stuff in......

Well that's not actually correct. Take the s54 for example, stick the standard fuel in it and unless I'm mistaken the engine will run significantly down on power and the ecu actually adjusts for the lower octane.I'm pretty sure it was the same on my old boss's evo8 fq330.
Don't know if this applies on the new m5.
Yeah, the odd tank of crude once in a blue moon wont kill it. The danger is in the type of useage. If your in M mode or generally giving it some stick the ecu is going to be working overtime trying to protect itself. At normal road speeds the car shouldnt suffer too much. I wouldnt run it on 95 for more than 1/2 a tanks worth before topping it up with 97+. It probably wont harm the car, but with these cars costing nearly as much in major repairs as they are physically worth is it a risk you should take unless its an emergency?
The M5 manual states.
Your BMW M5's engine is rated to run on:
Super Plus,98 RON. Fill up with fuel of this grade whenever possible, so that the nominal performance and fuel consumption values are achieved.
The Minimum permissible grade is:
Lead-free premium grade petrol, 95 RON.
So whilst it is not advised against the used of 95 RON, it's not going to help improve the performance of the car or actually reach the best fuel economy so surely it's a false economy as not only do you not get the best performance you suffer from worse fuel economy.

Usually v-power or waitrose super (which is BP ultimate) ... occasionally tesco but i get a drop in mpg on that stuff so i only use it if i need to.
Havent put any 95 in for a couple of years, and then just a couple of tanks - really notice the drop in power over 5 k rpm..... have also heard too much about o2 sensors failing on the cheap stuff
