Looking at this bike at Halfords http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/... which is down to £599 this weekend. It would be to replace an old GT hardtail which had budget Rock Shox forks which are now knackered anyway - so the lack of suspension doesn't bother me. Only off road stuff would be minor trails and gravelly cycle paths.

What do people think? I use a road bike for commuting, and I'm guessing this bike is a niche too far which is why it's reduced. I don't really know anything about SRAM, or what a carbon fork would feel like, so any thoughts welcome especially if someone has/has ridden one? Am I better off with an obvious choice at this point like a Rockhopper?

Cheers!

For what it's worth I think it'd cover your needs perfectly.... you could always interchange with a front Shox in the future if you needed more off-road support and as a groupset X7 is great... again if you didn't like it you can upgrade to an x9 rear derailer and sell on the x7 for a cost difference of maybe £30... Bet it's a LOT lighter than your old GT !!
