I've never driven any car faster than a 993, but I drove a 500bhp 996 GT2 yesterday, kindly loaned by a friend.

Jesus wept. What a fast car.
What a mental car. An insane car.
How do you lot keep your licences?
I'd lose mine in a week and probably kill myself at the same time.
Not for me, unfortunately.
Hats off to those of you who run these on the road.

Funnily enough - exactly the result of my test drive cool

Never really been into massive speed before, I've never had to hold on to the steering wheel to stop my hands coming off when accelerating, if you know what I mean. I would seriously worry about owning a car like this.

I feel exactly the same way about my 996 turbo.

Haven't ever driven (or been in) a gt2...but I know where you are coming from, I feel the turbo is actually too quick - and license and life are things I fear losing in it...

I imagine the 996 Turbo is in the same ballpark.
No wonder people rave about them.
Acceleration is definitely a drug.

However you don't have to drive them like you have stolen it.
I have to say i never take mine to the limit, basically because i haven't got the balls to do so!
I have owned a 996tt before and though there is only a small difference in figures there is IMO a big difference in performance, and they feel a lot more mechanical and raw than the 6t
Because they are so ferocious power wise i tend to drive mine slower than i do my Beemer.

Are they really that unusable? Does that not defeat the purpose? I want the gt2 to be my next car...so I am hoping you counter this with something that doesn't put me off!!

Definitely not unuseable. I was pootling around and I could have been driving a BMW 320. My wife could drive it. Anyone could drive it.

They're definitely usable. I did a loadof a11/a14/m25 work today and it's happy wafting along in traffic with the odd little blast here and there. Then on roundabouts etc it'll transform into as much of a bastid as you want it to be smile

And whilst it has similarities to a turbo it's a world apart. Huge upgrade.

No not at all, you can do you your weekly shop in it.
You just have to be careful as they can catch you out, for example last week i warmed her up on the drive, went for a quick run but forgot tyres were cold and nearly ended up facing the opposite way, they are a drivers car thats the bottom line, but sure you can pootle around in them too

It's usable in town but barely. I had a front airlift system installed and it's better since. Nevertheless, I live in the Netherlands where there are no twisties and speed checks all over. I don't really drive it much in the country and respect the limits when I do. We make trips to the Alps and mountain passes all around Europe to stretch its legs. Also, we make sure to pass through the German Autobahn every now and then.

Here is a clip from an unrestricted Autobahn section last summer. Mostly between 200-300 km/h. The way it accelerates from 200 km/h is amazing. The rest of the traffic look like they have stopped. smile

Believe you me they are massively different from the Turbo. I have had turbos and GT2s and although the turbo is a great all rounder with awesome performance the GT2 is a completely different drive with hugely noticable performance. I have now had GT2s for about 8 years and currently have one with Hybrid turbos and a DMS remap, 607 bhp at present just need to exhaust done now. I would certainly recommend you buy one but buy one quick, they are going up in value! The advice i was given before i bought my first ine was 'treat her with respect or she will bit you'

For track racing? Not for the road.

Drive fast in other countries where the points don't count.

In my time with my GT2 I accrued fines in Belgium, France and Germany (with a court conviction there) to go with my non-Porsche accrued fines in USA, Portugal and the UK.

It's ok thought because I've recently been on a Speed Awareness course so I won't be doing that again smile

Checkout Dodos vid below, this is what Porsche turbos are for IMO and the more power you have the better although the 996GT2's limitations are its lack of electronic aids to deploy big tuned torque but in the dry 750NM is perfectly usable on the 'bahn.

13500 miles in mine in 2 years, its used often, most weathers conditions. Comfort pack (aftermarket hard back seats installed) so that I could chuck 2 golf stand bags in the back. Amazing car. 500hp. Too quick - yes probably- for me. It gets full beans though quite often in the right conditions (weather / road and traffic).
But I equally enjoy pootling around, tunes on taking in the experience and the many admiring onlookers and car fanatics. And it's lovely to drive at low speeds , except for major speed humps. Just take them a bit slower in a GT2 than other cars!

Hardest thing about a GT2 as a daily driver - gettin in and out of the recaros in tight spaces when your 16 stone!!!
That's it - worth it though!!!

I think in the UK you'd have to carefully plan your routes and the time of day to drive - too many speed vans and cameras. Saying that, I slowed down for a 30 mph limit and saw I was doing 75, which felt like 40. I think you could drive everywhere quite safely at 75 mph in that car. It's nothing. In 4th you can't even hear the engine.

Use mine all the time as that's what their there for, I also have quite a few friends with Lamborghini's and Ferarri's so its also nice to have a car that is far quicker than there's at two to fours time the price. I don't go through clutches and breaks like them either lol!
