Hello all,

I've noticed in the last few days that there is a minor squealing coming from the brakes when applied at low speeds on my 07 V8VR. I had a look at my front pads and they seem to have loads of meat left on them (I think they were replaced prior to my picking up the car in December) however the same cannot be said for the rears so I think they might be on the way out. Although I've not got any indicator light yet, I saw a post from Mikey K who suggested it's sensible to replace them prior to the sensors engaging to avoid breaking the sensors and/or risking the discs.

I've read loads of threads on here about pads etc but being the inquisitive type, I have a couple of questions of my own:

1. On the pad below, is the groove highlighted supposed to be indicative of the wear on the pad? (Mine has about 1.5mm of groove remaining)

2. I've tried to take a picture of mine using my iPhone so sorry for bad quality - you can't really see the groove in this pic but could somebody give me an indication as to whether or not they're looking close to the end?

Many thanks!

Rich

Well, based on my own mileage of 4 to 5 k per year... And driving style which is pretty sedate... I wouldn't be replacing just yetsmile

They look fine for a fair bit yet
The groove isn't a wear indicator it clears debris

Looks about 5mm left still a bit to go before replacement.

I believe wear sensor kicks in (and will need to be replaced) at 2mm, I believe you can expect @ 1mm of wear per 1000 miles having discussed just this with Tim at Trinity last week.

Cheers

I too have been suffering with the same issue for a couple of months now. The car is due for a service in a couple of weeks and when I mentioned the squealing to the service dept when booking it in they enquired if it was just at low speeds and said that they will apply a ceramic coating to alleviate the problem.

Thanks for the feedback everybody! Sounds like I need to have a word with the dealer about eliminating the squeal.

I find a decent jet wash sorts this problem out.

What's the wear like on the other pad (other side of the disk)?

On the first picture you posted you can see the four metal wear indicators - that alone will make the pads squeal like crazy. OEM pads have these which is a stupid design if you ask me.

The groove, as others have posted, has nothing to do with it.

Swap the pads out, it's the only way to stop it if you have a duff set. BUT be aware that the stock pads are known for squealing - therefore you may just have the same problem with the next set.

If you want to guarantee no break squeal then swap to something like EBC red. They will squeal (badly) for the first 500-1000 miles during the bed in process however after they will be silent. Used them on all my cars as I hate noise and dust and they cure both, so my first choice everytime.

So I figured this was worth a go - I did jet wash/brake cleaner/jet wash/brake cleaner/jet wash again. Left it to dry then took it for a quick drive and so far so good, no more squealing! Thanks for the suggestion.

Its not a cure but if you keep on top of the cleaning it keeps the squeal at bay, they give off a lot of dustfrown

Four wear indicators? Do you mean the metal clips that hold on the shims?

These bits are made of metal and are the culprits for all the noise according to my dealer. Have a look at some non-OEM pads and you'll see these bits don't exist..
