Hey Guys

I'm going to be picking up a 12 Plate Mercedes SLK next week. Been getting insurance quotes, just wanted to ask..

Voluntary Excess is going to be high, but which should I go for?

£2500 Voluntary Excess or £5000 Voluntary Excess, the £5k excess lowers the price by £500.

So my question is, is it worth me paying an extra £500 for the lower £2500 excess or have the £5k voluntary meaning £500 off my premium. Btw my voluntary excess is so high because of my young age 19.

Because I'm tempted to go with the 5k Voluntary seeing as it'll will save me £500 now, but in the long run if i have an accident then i'll be paying more!!

Thanks for the help.

Have you got £5k sitting in your bank for when you crash it?

Yeah. But if i don't crash it, I've saved £500 from having my voluntary at 5k.

Have you considered not having a brand new car as a first car?

But if you do, you'll have lost £2500. I'm not really sure this a decision people on the internet can make for you.

Either way, you should get a private plate.

I'd suggest looking into an excess insurance policy, essentially insurance for your insurance excess should you ever need it and see what ever option comes out cheapest.

Or should make - to some people 5k is a vast amount.

I could live off that for well over a year in relative comfort.

If your're worried about £500 difference then I'd be questioning the sanity of buying a new merc.

Mind you, you can always flog that expensive private plate of yours to fund the excess if you crash it.

Didn't the kids break up on Friday? Gets earlier every year.

Every penny counts.

500 quid - not worth worrying about relatively.

I bought one of these, fixed it, and would have a fair bit of it's insurance for 500 quid.

Why a new car for a first car?

You start out with a bad thing, for example, second hand corsa, so that when you get a good one you appreciate it more.

Isn't my first car mate, my second. Been driving a 1.2 since I was 17.

Er, yes I am. I'll take photos and bump my other thread (the thread about whether I should stick my plate plate on or not, which some people did not believe)

you'll see

Go for the £2500 excess.

Use it to ram raid somewhere and make sure you steal more than £3k's worth.

Quids in.

I fear this may not go well. hehe I was recently astounded by Admiral's £5000 excess that I was offered and started a thread on it. Needless to say I chose the £750 excess.

Ok. thumbup

PS: real world testing has shown that the above bike would leave a corsa behind, of any displacement. Possibly your new merc too. smile

Remember the Bird's Custard or nobody on here will believe you.

Eg here's my new Ferrari I picked up this afternoon:

Nobody seems to believe me, though.
