Hello there PHers,
Im a 19 year old big time car lover. approaching my first years 'no claims' and looking to upgrade. At the moment I have an ancient ford escort 1.4, it takes about half hour to go from 0-60, and has no torque what so ever in middle-high speed range, and my passengers get out an push because they make it even slower! (only joking but still, its mega slow)
It is a beutiful car but I cant stand hearing it rev whilst the speedo stands almost still.
I have done my time as a new driver with a slow hunk of sh*t, i want something with more poke!
So far im looking at a 10-12 year old ford fiesta zetec s. with 1.6 focus engine that does 0-60 in 10 secs, and apparently has excellent mid range torque making it perfect for overtaking. I know 10 seconds is no bugatti veyron, but it beats my escort hands down and should keep me happy for a couple of years. Anyone own/ owned one of these got any comments?
PS... please dont tell me about the saxo vts. I know its faster but I hate it! thanks!

Go leftfield. There are a few younger lads with Volvo T5s on here because the insurance is lower than expected.
As said to every younger driver, insurance will be the issue. If you drive a car that lots of other younguns have crashed it will be more expensive to insure. The less "young" the car the easier the insurance will be.
ETA, one of my friends was running a Saab 9-3 Turbo at 20.

You don't want anything with more poke. What you want is another couple of years of NCB and sensible insurance premiums. More money to spend on coke and hookers that way.
If you really do want to go faster, think outside the box, and look at cars that aren't "normal" for young people. Something like a Jag XJ maybe a lot cheaper than you think.

I'm 19 and recently upgraded to a 1.8 Corsa, bit quicker than the Fiesta with a 0-60 of 8 seconds. I've just done my renewal for insurance and it was £780 with an exhaust and interior changes, that's 2 years experience and 2 years ncb. Not sure if you think the Corsa has the same image as a Saxo?!

thankyou for the quick replies. Your corsa looks lovely by the way. I am certainly going to look for one!
I am about to get 1 years no claims, ive had my licence for about a year and a half. My insurance on my big fat slow escort is 3000 with the NCB, my insurance on the fiesta is 2200, faster and cheaper what more can I ask for! lol

The Mk5 Zetec S's are good fun to drive and actually feel quicker than 10seconds to 60.
Friend of mine has a Puma conversion in his, brilliant little car although the main factor is ... RUST
So far ive managed to find a couple with minimal rust on them, although they value a couple hundred more! Friend of mine has a Puma conversion in his, brilliant little car although the main factor is ... RUST

Cheap, reliable and the V6 provides adequate smooth power.
I had one as my first car, but it was only the 2.0 litre. Still carried me and my mates all over the country in comfort for a couple years before I moved abroad.
Taught myself to drift in the wet/snow.
Fond memories of that old thing.
