Out doing some photography this afternoon, took about 300 photos.

Got home, downloaded them, 41 are jpg, then the rest are all RAW! confused

I'm sure I didn't change anything, in fact the switch from one to other happens between two photos of the same thing.

Is there anything on the main buttons (ie outside of going into the main menu) that I could have pressed accidentally that would have switched it over?

Before I start, I don't use Nikon so am not 100% sure on how they work but on some Canon bodies if you use scene modes (eg landscape, portrait etc) you don't get raw shooting, could this be what happened here?

If they go in pairs you've set 'RAW+JPG' somehow.

Yup. You've either depressed the quality button and fiddled with the command dial (or the sub-command dial if you have set them the other way round) or the camera's too damn smart for you and recognises that you really should be shooting RAW for everything......

biggrin

(Is RAW any kind of problem for you?)

Virtual pint for K12!! beer

Exactly right. The button beneath the ISO button is "QUAL", and switching to RAW is just one turn away in one direction.

Thank you, that's been really bugging me! biggrin

As to shooting RAW, I tend to shoot a lot of pics and upload some onto my web site. And I don't have any processing software, so JPG seems to work well for my needs.

Cheers!

If RAW's not for you don't accept any cyberbullying, but you've got the ideal opportunity to download a free trial of something and see what RAW is like for 30 days. (I'm biased but Lightroom, then there is Capture One or Aperture)

Funny you mention that because I was thinking about buying some processing software.

Was going to get Photoshop Elements but you reckon Lightroom eh?

Just started a new thread on this

Use a RAW processor smile Lightroom, Capture One, Photoshop (via Adobe Camera RAW)...

It's the fundamental difference between JPG and RAW files - RAW files aren't actually images, they are sensor infomation, and as such they need to be 'interpreted'.

A RAW file processed by one application will be different to the same RAW file processed in another - it's not a conversion from one image format into another. There is no 'correct' JPG version of a RAW file, just an interpretation of the sensor info contained in the RAW file smile
