My friend is considering a brake upgrade for his 944 2.7 and is looking at purchasing the £906 kit from here....

http://www.porscheshop.co.uk/acatalog/porsche_944_...

However I cant help but think its a rip off!!! as basically it seems to be a set of refurbed callipers (£250) with disks (£150) and greenstuff pads(£50) and some fancy brackets he doesnt actually need!

So where does the extra £450 come from compared to buying them individually??unless its for the brackets??

Please if I have been an idiot and missed something point it outsmile Im just trying to save him having his pants pulled down.

Does seem a lot.
For a 2.7 why does he think he needs this? If there is an issue would it not make more sense to make sure what he has works properly?
Brake pipes are notorious on 944s to corrosion and plate lift is also an issue.
I don't recall ever feeling "underbraked" in old S and that's a similar car.
If his system is fine and he wants more then surely buy it piecemeal?

Would be better off spending that money on GAZ suspension or similar, then he will be cornering so fast he really won't want to brake so much.

What set up does he have now and what issues is he experiencing to think he needs an upgrade?

theres quite a few brackets that allow you to fit just about anything, you should be able to save quite a bit buying the parts yourself.
i'd guess that kits using the calipers off a 928 s4 which are popular for upgrades but pricey, some people use boxster/audi/vw calipers which are usually cheaper.
to maxmimise the larger sizes he may have to look at changing the wheels for extra clearance?
pretty big bill for better brakes when the std set up is man enough for most inc track work with the right pads/discs/fluid.

good luck with whatever you choose you can't beat stopping!

He doesnt need an upgrade, a point I have gone through with him at great length!! he just has a seized caliper and worn discs, and was going to buy refurbed set, however wants red brakes and has the disposable income to pay for them so in all honesty from his point of view its just aesthetics.

If he is needing new discs and to have calipers refurbed, he may aswell use it as an excuse to upgrade I suppose.

He was going to order the kit in the morning, but I said it was too expensive for what it is, although I must admit Im not too clued up on porschessmile I cant believe how expensive parts are for what you get, you poor porsche guys seem to get your pants pulled down in the bhp per £ stakes!!

Thankyou all for your replies though, I think I will just order the parts all individually ande save him £350.

Considering your location someone like Promax or RPM would be preferable.

I rebuilt the calipers on my 924S for the sum of £9.18 each using OPC seal kits.
They are single pot the same as used on the 2.5 944 not sure about the 2.7
Think I paid about £150 for the discs. Didnt bother with uprated pads as i dont track my car.
Maybe as another poster has pointed out, the money may be better spent tightening up what may well be a tired suspension.

what wheels has he got? The "big red" brake kit, as fitted to the 944 Turbo etc is very good, but wont fit with smaller wheels.

As far as I'm aware the 944T had medium blacks, though the big reds do need 17 inch wheels.

That kit looks like boxster (s?) calipers. Looks very pricy, but if he wants red brakes....

They have a separate price for a fitting kit (£110!)

Standard discs, pads and rebuilt calipers would make much more sense

Try fitting some braided hoses first they made my brakes 'feel' way better.

Would S2/turbo/968 calipers and disks even fit underneath anything smaller than 16" wheels? Another thing he could do after the suspension is run small track tyres. Might be hard to believe but if he chats to EMC Motorsport the quickest car out of basic 944/S2/968 through Gerrards corner at Mallory is actually the basic 944 running on 15" wheels and 205x50-15 Dunlop track tyres. If he just wants to spank some money in the brakes then just go for some Pagid race pads, there mental expensive in any size but worth every penny.

If he just wants red brakes then either get them powder coated or paint them as I did on my 2.7.

Stripped the calipers, cleaned them up and painted them, reassembled checking that they slid as they should, new discs pads and braided hoses and then topped off with some caliper decals. It'll stop on a sixpence!

Excuse dodgy iphone photo:

Mine is a late 2.5 Lux & it is on Turbo/S2 brakes, easy swap & not a lot of cash. This is more than enough brakes for an 2.7 on the road. In fact as everyone says the old callipers are adequate in good nick!
My old brakes needed refurb (every bleed nipple was seized for a start!) & I was offered a set of S2 corners for very little money. SO fitted them, well Northways did.
