Hi,

I have a tuned zetec and was wondering what rads people are using?
My engine spec is very similar to the engine used in the Crossle 9s cars.
Does anyone know what size rad the 9s uses, even some pics would help.

Currently running with a polo rad but this doesn't quite give enough cooling.
Its fitted in a Fury.

Thanks

Which Polo rad do you have Dave? The common one (in seven's) is fron 1lt and is 380mm wide and 322mm high across the matrix. Furys will take the 1.3lt rad thats 430mm wide.

There's a few 525mm wide ones from various 1.8VWs, but most have the pipes either on the oposite side or no aip bleed pipe. There's a 525x312 rad' thats the same fitting set-up from a 1.8 VW Santana that you should be able to squeeze in.

I have got the one you told me to get.

"The rad is from a number of Polo's and Golf's. Polo 1.1+1.3 mk2 83-90 manual non-AC. Also Golf Mk2 1.1+1.3 83-91. Measures 430x322 across the core. inlet and outlet on the nearside and a bleed pipe at the top and a fan switch fitting. Serck Marston number is 2719819."

But after seeing the Fury in the Classifieds and seeing that it used a Crossle 9s rad. I got to wondering. The rad I had only ever held a temp, it never really cooled. After being stuck in traffic it would take ages to get the temp back down.

Seeing as I have the Fury in bits I thought that I might have a look at upgrading the rad before the trip.

Thanks for pointing out the larger 1.8VW Santana size. It looks as though Rob F might have had one on his stylus a few years ago. I might give this a go or just get some water wetter and enlarge the holes in the bonnet vents (as suggested) while the cracks are being repaired.

Forgot I'd told you that (it's my age).

The 430mm rad is use in some 1.8 Passat's as well as the 1.1+1.3 Polo's and Golf's. Is the front of your's fully ducted to prevent any air through the grill escaping around the rad? I can't remember (see above^). From memory (^^^) it always seemed to be marginal on cooling, so the slightly bigger rad should give a bit more leeway. Not familiar with the Crossle rad but the other alternative would be a custom Ally rad.
Water wetter will help either way you go as will a weaker A/freeze mix Don't go without though as it does more than just prevent freezing. 20% mix should do.

or the fact that I like to take my time doing things. Its still not back on the road after 8 months.

Bit of an update.
A fellow Fury owner has told me that the Crossle rad is:
overall width 25 inches
core width 21 inches
height 9 inches
depth 3 inches with a four row core.

As I have a similar specd engine to what they use I will probably be going for the 525x312 rad' thats the same fitting set-up from a 1.8 VW Santana.

Next question is how much of an effort do I put in to making it fit. Do I cut the brackets off and reweld or just make some plate adaptors.

I use a Ford Escort MK5 Turbo Diesel rad in my modified silver top mid-engined Ginetta G32, works perfectly, didn't had any temp problems so far :-)
