Don't know if this is the right place to post?!

I've just sold a car to a gentleman who was very determined not to waste my time by letting me fill in the V5.

He has told me that he will be shipping the car immediately to 'Africa' and when I asked 'where abouts?', he said, 'West Africa' - he was also very inquisative (sp?) about the amount of tax/MOT left on it.....not relevant if he's sending it oversees you'd have thought?!

Anyway, I know I shouldn't of left the V5, but I have his money and he has a sack of st of a car, but how can I ensure that I desolve the car of my responsability with the DVLA - I just know he won't claim it is his!

I wonder if you will also get all his speeding ticket and parking fines from now on too.

I suspect you have an obligation to capture this information as part of selling a vehicle. ISTR fines are chargable if you fail?

If you didn't trust him why wouldn't you just insist on following the rules? He is possibly here illegally and will be without a driving licence, the car won't be insured hence his concern with the length of T&T so he can break as few rules as possible until it comes time to scrap it and buy another with T&T to run just as illegally.

DirectGov - How to notify DVLA if you sell your vehicle:

If you no longer have your registration certificate V5C

If you don't have a registration certificate you can still tell DVLA that you no longer have the vehicle.

To do this you will need to write to DVLA, Swansea, SA99 1AR giving the:
•vehicle registration mark
•make and model
•exact date of sale
•name and address of the new keeper

However, note that DVLA records won’t be complete until the new keeper tells DVLA in writing. Until they do, the police may need to contact you if they have to make enquiries about the vehicle.

Erm by not giving the V5 away idea

Truly I hope you get grief over this, as it's idiots that offer up criminals such opportunities that cause so many problems and waste public money.

Anything you get you will have brought on yourself.

Good thought process.

I dont trust the buyer.

Shall I
a)make sure I follow the process properly to absolve myself of any future responsibility for the vehicle
b)skip steps and leave myself a headache for the future when fines start rolling in

I think this needs to be added to some kind of flow chart, I just don't know how to make one that isn't somehow racist.

No, you shouldn't have. Do you have the buyers address? If so it's probably made up, but at least you can pass this onto the DVLA.

A big vat of nitric acid will dissolve the car, but to devolve your responsibility to the DVLA I'd suggest a chat with the DVLA themselves and explain the situation. wink Seriously, give them a call.

Many thanks for that. Great help.

I didn't feel comfortable in his house, on my own, with his friends there, so I got the cash and didn't argue the toss.

He was the perfect gentleman so I wasn't worried they'd slap me (probably becuase I'm "powerfully built" [sic]), but I didn't want to hang about for him to change his mind either.....

I have his name and address (I took a photo of a bill on the table)....I'll pass it on to the DVLA.

I did similar a while back, not for dodgy reasons just that the buyer was a nice lad and we chatted to long. After he left, he'd not filled in the V5C (isnt that the bit?) so I wrote to the DVLA telling them I'd sold the car. They wrote back confirming what I'd told them and told me to keep the letter.

As it happens, the guy probaby did the V5 himself, but nice to know the DVLA weren't tools about it.

Same happened with me. We chatted for a while about lots (he was driving the car back to the same town I was brought up in) and we went to the bank so I could actually pay the money in. When we got back I completely forgot about the V5C and just sent him a text and wrote to the DVLA. They replied as above...

My parents had armed police arrive one night as my brother sold a Pug 309 for scrap/spares or repair to a young lad and his grandad, didnt fill in the log book and it got used in an armed robbery so make sure you get a signature.

You are liable for speeding fines and parking tickets, even if you say it isnt you I think you can get in trouble for not notifying them of the change of ownership.

I sold a Metro to a little toe rag, Metro GTI which he then ragged round and parked with inpunity, he filled the new keepers bit in and logbook and then left it on the table but as my back was turned he grabbed both bits, didnt realise until he had gone, I worked at the Police at that point so it was easy to sort out and matey got a little visit and the car got a good looking over along with his docs, surprised he used his own address.

So, use gut feel, if you arent happy, dont let it go without it all being signed, you will get a notification letter a week or two later, then you are off the hook.

mate, calm down...

when someone is exporting a car outside the UK you are supposed to give them the whole V5, it enables them to register the car in their own country. so the geezer did nothing wrong!

familiarise yourself with procedures before posting such negative uninformed ste.

OP, you should've got a signed invoice stating the time and mileage at hand over, but otherwise write a letter to the DVLA as others have said.

contrary to what a few people here have stated you were nothing more than a bit naive.

i certainly don't wish you grief....rolleyes
