RE: PistonHeads Track Days 2012 - Goodwood

The PistonHeads track tour had planned to visit just Silverstone and Rockingham this year, but a late entry to the schedule sees us paying a visit to the famous, and challenging, circuit at Goodwood on 16th April. If you fancy a birds eye view you can see how Dan did when he took part in a sprintthere last weekend.
This could be you... sort of...From 1948 to 1966 Goodwood was the social and spiritual home of British motor racing, and the circuit hosted contemporary racing of all kinds, including Formula One, the famous Goodwood Nine Hours race and the celebrated Tourist Trophy sports car race.
Sir Stirling knows his way around...1 Light braking into double apex corner
2 5th gear
3 Turn-in critical –flat out if you are good enough
4 Light braking and across to left on exit
5 Immediately over to right as much as possible, probably only half way, but grab 3rd gear
6 Overbrow – flat
7 Get as far left as possible
8 Allow car to power-slide across road under full power
9 4th gear and use all of road under full power
10Peak revs in top straight lining kink
11 Into 4th whilst braking hard
12 3rd and dip into apex from left and powerslide across road
13 Right along the edge here, but don't lift!
14 2nd gear, right and left, shaving wall on left
15 3rd gear
16 4th gear and flat out, over to left

Goodwood Motor Circuit is an extraordinary place and is the only classic circuit in the world to remain entirely in its original form.
This could be you... sort of...
It was also the scene of legendary battles between some of the world’s great racing heroes of the era including McLaren, Moss, Fangio, Hill, Stewart, Surtees and Brabham. Now the pinnacle of Goodwood's long history will take place on 16th April as 25 PHers take to the circuit to show how it’s really done (you sure that's right, Garlick? Ed).
Goodwood instructors will be on hand to get the best out of you and your car, and each day begins with a signing-on session, then a full safety briefing followed by noise testing of your vehicle

2 5th gear

As we mentioned earlier this session is only open to 25 cars, and spaces will be charged at £300 per vehicle. All instruction and light refreshments are included in the price. Passengers are very welcome, so feel free to bring along your friends.

What's up at Goodwood? I assume that the PH day is following the lines of the trackdays outlined upon the Goodwood website. 25 cars, 10 minute sessions of 5 cars maximum on circuit at one time. Allowing for 5 minutes between sessions you will be on track once every 75 minutes. One hour for lunch and not too many red flag periods means about 5 by 10 minute sessions for £300. Doesn't sound too good value for money...
Back to my question 'What's up at Goodwood?'. Last year it was 30 cars and 15 minute sessions for 10 cars at a time. I notice that Easy Track and other Track Day providers are not listing Goodwood in their schedules this year - so is Goodwood cutting out the organisers and going it alone? We know they are always concerned with noise - but do they now have a problem that has cut their sessions by half?
I love Goodwood - it is fast and interesting - but I might just give it a miss this year.

Can't recall length of sessions, but I am pretty sure it's been 5 cars at a time for a while now on the 105db days at Goodwood, 10cars at a time for their 98db days. Never heard of that. Standard track day rules when I have been there.105db days have been 5 cars for a long while as stated above.
However many sessions you get it's a simply wonderful place to drive.

The point was i can get to drive one of the worlds most famous F1 circuits useing the same pits as the F1 guys [unlike silverstone] for a good few quid less than a day at goodwood being arranged by p/h.h to my local Shell about it!Just booked Cadwell for £165 so why should Goodwood be double? & unless i've missed something its a public forum where i along with everyone else can voice there opinion! At least i had one, i suppose i could of just been a sad hater looking to make some smart arsed comment!

Goodwood is a v.expensive venue for a number of reasons, not least of all the planning/noise restrictions enforced there. These dictate that a (very) limited of cars can run on-track simultaneously - as low as 5 cars at a time on 105dB days.h as you put it!Much as I love the place, we haven't been to Goodwood for a few years now because it's too marginal for us - it's a long way to take the truck at 10mpg and those costs need to be covered.
I have massive respect for PH for sticking a date together at Goodwood - at any price - they're always going to be up against the people who think it's too expensive and that's one of the most expensive venues in the country on a per-head basis. That said, it's in a great location for a big chunk of the market and the history and atmopshere at the place is pretty much unrivalled in the UK.
Ultimately, Lord March could make significantly more money and have massively less hassle by turning it into a golf course or something so we should all be thankful he continues with his passion for motorsport.

Bit confused as to the only five cars on track at any one time? can't see how that makes a t/d possible or profitable? time wise and numbers?
I had a look at your website and thought the majority of your dates well priced so i'll make a point of introducing myself on one of you days.
As you will see by some of my posts i am a great supporter of T/d and often try and drum up numbers for what i think is the best & safest way to enjoy a fast car without getting nicked!
Problem is when your trying to budget for as many td as possible including some must do's like Spa & the ring price becomes a big factor as 888's and fuel aint getting any cheaper! Hence evening sessions @ brands etc become very attractive
