Buying paint

Hi Chaps,

I'm trying to get my hands on some spray cans mixed up to match my cars colour (Suzuki Bright Red), Halfrauds don't sell it and the only other place I found is a bit pricey.

Any recommendations for websites where I can get paint mixed up into a spraycan to my paint code etc? Will be after filler, primer and clear coat from the same place too ideally.

Any local bodyshop supplies will be able to accomodate you, plus if you haven't got a colour code they will match the colour up for you. Much better service than internet suppliers, and you can see what you're buying.

This thread made me start looking into paint again...I have a hardtop I bought secondhand for my Z3 that I want to repaint due to scratches, my RS2000 could do with some paintwork once I've done the welding and my Z3 needs a small job on the bumper.

I realised that they talk about not being able to supply paint for use on cars on some sites, even though the paint was under a 'car paint' section. Some mention that it can only be used on Classic car restorations so wondered how they would know this (what would their definition be, would my RS2000 count, would my Z3 not count?). I'll paint the Z3 hardtop black, so at least I could use the same gloss black paint that I buy for my (black) RS2000. Not sure about the bumper repair, though it is small enough to do using cans if need be.

I've only really used cellulose before apart from a couple of small jobs using a basecoat (1K?) and a premixed clearcoat, for the odd bonnet/door type jobs. I don't even know if the spares I have for my old DeVilbis 'gun would allow me to spray more modern paints such as water based ones if that's all I'm allowed to buy? I know the gun itself isn't allowed in bodyshops as it isn't the latest HVLP type, but I believe I'm OK to use this still as an amatuer?

I've just ordered some paint from paints4u. I've not used them before so will see how it goes.

Need to deal with a scuff on the bumper of my Volvo which has been there since I bought it and one on the wife's Zafira which appeared last week. Dirty great white scrape on the front wheel arch.

I'm not really sure on the paint types I need either. What is the deal with cellulose, basecoat, 1k, 2k, no idea what it means? I'm familiar with the idea of primer, colour, clear, but not sure where the previous terms fit in? Is basecoat the same as the colour and then you need a clear/lacquer or no?

I'm trying to redo a whole rear bumper so bit unsure as to how well it will turn out!

If you're trying to do the whole bumper, you'll probably need basecoat (a matt metallic paint), then clearcoat to go over the top to give it the shine. If it's scratched such that you need to fill it then you'll need primer too for covering the filler and a small area around it.

I was rubbing the whole thing down today because a) it is in the wrong colour, b) there is some scratches and c) there was a pretty significant scuff. It's now a lot smoother but will still need a little bit of filler in places I think, will get that done and rubbed down then onto the paint!

Got my paints from paints4u. They look good but I've managed to leave them at work so I'm not going to be repairing the cars this weekend...
