That's not just a laugh, thats a ROFLMAO (SQUARED !!) Very very good.

And as an owner of a 280, I can only think wistfully what it must be like to pull away in one of the 400+ wedges..... < sigh > .... and again look at what's around here in NZ that will go in that small space......< double sigh >. and that 4.0 Cologne in the xplorer may look like a good deal, it's just not tuned right for a wedge....and the 3.7 from Lancs is on the other side of the planet.....< triple sigh >

Cheer up mate..You could always go the supercharger route and an updated exhaust system..i;e NO silencers..Or put a Ford 302 in it..They fit in quite well..Then supercharge that..

Yeah, out here in NZ a 302 is not too hard to find. Not cheap any more though and a bit worried about the extra weight.
I actually have a Buick 3.8 V6 with a T5 box sat on my garage floor (ex Holden Commodore) which taunts me now and then. It's a 90 degree V6 so is a lot wider than the Cologne, but having looked at those photos of a Rover V8 in a S1 chassis, I keep measuring it, and it's right in the grey area as to whether it would go in or not.....
Power wise, 3.8 is lower on BHP that the std Rover, but has more torque (almost same as a 390 !!), and is economical too. And there was a Factory supercharged option !!! (drool) Parts are a doddle too. Lots and lots around in Oz and NZ for these lumps.
Supercharger on Cologne is always an option too of course.

Now I COULD be completely wrong, but I was under the impression the Buick V6 shared the same basic architecture as the Rover V8, seeing how that was derived from the Buick 215.I actually have a Buick 3.8 V6 with a T5 box sat on my garage floor (ex Holden Commodore) which taunts me now and then. If the RV8 fits, so should the buick V6. You MAY even get a Rover box to mate up to it, but really, I'm just guessing now!
OOps, you guys are right, the Rover is indeed a Buick V8 descendent ..... [ Duh - Stupid me ! ]
Great point about the fit - On the basis that the later wedges were widened more or less only
at the rear of engine compartment, the Buick V6 should go in. [ Mine is a series 1 ]
I don't know how much has changed over the years, it looks very tight, but then the 350 photos look like a shoehorn job also......Hmmmmm..... {Re-animates those thoughts about an engine and gearbox swop.....)
I don't think the bellhousing patterns are the same anymore...but I have the matching T5 for the engine, so no problem there.
The Holden V6 is serpentine belt (slim front), no dizzy (wasted spark) bank fired GM digital EEC, so I guess it's ideal and reasonably modern (~ 1991), and its UNLEADED !
Now I just have to explain it to my other half....and perhaps secretly swop it for one of the supercharged ones.
"What?....No dear, it's always had that lump on the top, it's an extra alternator....."
Yeah. Right.
