Good evening all,

On a railway forum we're debating the the spec of this Granada. Sadly the DVLA doesn't pick up on the reg even if you guess the prefix of A - F on the reg plate.

My guess is a Ghia (due to the lights) on Steelies/Wheel trims instead of alloys?

What do we think?

Cheers all smile

Ime no expert on these , but circa 1988, I sold a very nice Oyster Gold V reg 2.8i for my ex wifes brother. I well remember it's rattly tappets and orrible Dark Brown cloth interior .

A former boss had a stunning Met blue 2.8i Ghia X for a while, circa 1983, it was a rare manual , i loved driving it ! l

I think that Poverty Spec MK2 Granadas were quite common ( GL ) etc, but The one in your photo looks like a Ghia Estate, alloys , side rubbing strips, fog lamps etc. If the last 2 letters of the reg no are HK , then it's an Essex registered one and likely a Ford Press Car.

No doubt a Granny expert on here will be able to identify it.

That is a 2.8 Ghia X estate. It has alloy wheels in the photo.

In 1982 Ford changed the range slightly, reducing the price of the Granada 2.8 Ghia (IIRC the saloon dropped from £12,298 to £9990) but at the same time they reduced the specification of the Ghia quite a bit - which included deleting the front fog lights, amongst other things.
At the same time Ford introduced the Ghia X, which included all the original Ghia's equipment and added air conditioning and heated electric front seats. The last of the original higher spec Ghias would have been on an 'X' registration - this is an 'A' or a 'B' plate, so since it has front foglights, Ghia chromed front grille surround and Ghia alloys I would say it is a Ghia X.

What's that behind the Granada? May as well identify every vehicle in the picture.

That man knows his Fords! Brings back memories of posh cars having front fog lights!

We've got the Senator "‎3.0 litre 12 valve by the look of it! Placcy wheel trims but too much brightwork to be a 2.5!"

Yes that Euston and many thanks for the gen on the Granny! smile

Whilst I'm not doubting someone who seems very knowledgable, I can't get my head around those figures!

I was only 2 in 1982, but I know that my Dad bought a late 1920s motorbike and sidecar for £1000 about then. That bike's now probably worth around £20,000 - making the equivelant Granada £240,000! The bike was desirable as a vintage vehicle even then, and I'm sure it has gone up a bit relative to a new car, but I hadn't realised by that much!

I also know that my folks paid £17,000 for a sizeable three bedroom bungalow in Suffolk about then too. That would make the Granny the equivelant of about £150,000, relative to the house! Again, I know that house prices have risen faster than inflation but even if the house was 'only' worth £100,000 the car would be over £60,000!

Were new cars really that expensive back then?!

1985 I bought a 2 bedroom terraced house in Leicester for £13000. I can't remember what cars were costing me then but that granny price does seem high.

In about 1986 I paid £22,500 for a 3 bed semi, and £6279 for a new XR2 bought with my dad's Ford employee discount, I think that the list price for the car was about £9k ish. The XR2 had the not very good 8v CVH engine, no central locking, no power steering, no air con, no abs, no fuel injection or electronic ignition, no electric windows etc, you could get much better today for not much more money! The house on the other hand would cost maybe £170k.

It looks like a Ford Scorpio on the other platform so obviously not a 'period' shot. Looks staged for an advert of some kind.
