Hi, I am new to pistonheads, and I am after some help. I'm looking for a car for about 6,500 pounds and about 150bhp to 200 bhp. Although I am quite young, so insurance is a real pain. (currently paying 1200 for a stock 1.6 focus!) I have been looking at fiesta St's? But I would appreciate any help! Any ideas??

Jag XJ-R. Seriously. Check the insurance premiums. What you gain there you'll probably lose in fuel costs, but it'll be a much nicer place to be.

I'll have a look and see what sort of price do they come at do you know? Roughly? Thanks for the advice though!

No XJ-Rs in at the moment on PH, but a fine selection of standard XJs.

The same trick works with other large cars (S class Mercedes, BMW 7 series, big Volvos - essentially anything that you've never seen young people driving tends to be cheaper to insure solely because very few young people crash them)

What do you want from the car? and exactly how young are you? it may be better to stick to the focus for another year until the insurance dropssmile

Although if I was in your position I would be spending less on the car to have more to cover the insurance;)

Ideally, I would like some power, thats not massive to insure! That is ideally though. I am 20 years old but I will have 4 years no claims soon (touch wood), which helps. So... any ideas for cars?!

They used to be just up the road from me, and a couple of people I know have bought from them. They always seem to have really nice stock, so I'm always having a sneaky look smile

How about an E39 5-Series - 530i Sport? These bigger BMWs are much cheaper to insure than most small hot hatchbacks, plus they can be had for half your budget.

Yes, it's a mature car - but straight 6, manual, RWD...

EP3 Civic Type R. With 4 years ncb you should get a decent quote, try Greenlight insurnace, A-Plan or Adrian Flux for quotes.

Likewise a few of the other hot hatches.

I was 21, wih 4 years' driving experience when I got my 182 and that was 700 quid p.a. insurance.

Totally different experience next to an XJ or 7 series though! smile

I've just bought a 2005 EP3 Type R and absolutely love the thing, plenty quick enough and looks and drives great. With your sort of healthy budget look around and find the best you can, there are plenty of good ones about, so be choosey.

Take one out for a spin, you'll love it. smile
