I know its an old idea but i decided to try it and was impressed by how easy and cheap it was to install and how effective it is at cooling the IC.. i did a short vid to show the system working as below..the sprayer does not need to be on permanently...a 5 second spray is enough to bring the temps down quickly...but for me it is designed for time attack to be left n permanent whilst doing a hot lap..it takes 10 minutes of constant spraying to empty the tank...it can not really be seen from the vid but the spray pattern is quite wide and does cover the entire IC in a fine mist of water...

Only problem i can see is where you have mounted the water tank, you will soon be spraying very hot water on the IC.

Yes the pump is the standard one from the windscreen washer..you cant hear it at all when driving though...this is the cheap option, you can do exactly the same but add a proper high pressure water pump from a company like alcohol injection systems, they are about 100quid for a 150psi pump.. which would atomise the water more and be quieter..i may also bypass the windscreen washer pump and add one of these..and again should be just a 10 minute job

..the water temp is not really an issue...it gets sprayed as a fine mist so it cools to air temp very quickly, the main thing is that you have water on the surface area of the IC as it transfers heat much quicker than air alone, so as soon as it touches the Ic it absorbs heat and evaporates...but also it actually does not get too hot in that location..it may do on other cars im not sure but because i have lots of heat wrap and turbo jackets and heat shields etc it is nt very hot in this area plus this is directly in the flow of air that passes through the engine bay from the top scoop to the back exit either side of the IC..

Also this system works with the air, so the water really just speeds up heat transfer so that the air can take it away, so it is still very effective with warm water..for hot laps on time attack i can fill with ice..but fr use on a daily basis it would not be beneficial as the ice would melt and the water would be warm again after 20-30 minutes...

Good approach, Chris! The window washer tank and pump is a quick, simple and cheap solution for a 15 minute track session. With noticable power loss on hot days at the track, I've thought about trying water spray but never got around to it.

What kind of temperature drops are you seeing? Have you tried using EasiMap to log your IAT and MAP?

Also enjoyed watching a few of your YouTubes. smile

Hi Bill,

I have not logged any data with regards to temps, not a very scientifical approach but i did go for a good run in 30 deg temps today with it running and was without any noticeable power loss, i suppose it has to dispersing heat faster by its nature and design but by how much i have no idea.
I am glad you liked the vids, i have recently purchased a gopro Hd Hero so i will be adding a lot more clips from now on...smile

Chris, is it worth putting another jet on there? Just thinking that would give more even spray over the IC.

You cant see it on the vid but those nozzles give a veery wide spray pattern, when you look closely moisture is evenly coated all over the surface of the IC, it works better than i expected..but i suppose an extra nozzle linked to a proper high pressure pump would make it work even better.

Would you not be as well to fit water injection so it actually cools the head/pistons aswell as lowering the intake temps???

yes definately better... i would prefer to do that..but i would want the aquamist HSF3 system which is linked to the injector cycle to do it properly, it would cost 600 plus install plus it would need a remap..

This Ic sprayer cost literally nothing as my friend gave me the nozzles and it is a very easy install, basically for the performance gains vs cost, it has to be one of the most effective performance mods you can do, and of course nothing can ever really go wrong with this system, if it runs out of water then you are still getting the same performance you had before..so it only offers gains and no losses...

Fair enough if it's costing you nothing, but I'm told from some knowledgable chaps that fitting a system linked to boost pressure (£300)is just as good, seeing as the risk/gains is only really while at higher boost levels.

And it doesn't need mapped either as it's not about making power, it's about keeping the engine safe and cooler and in turns keeps the air charge cooler and maintains the good power levels.

Interested in all ideas of course but the tried and tested route generally is best value and gets results.

Ye i was looking at the boost systems..they do work...some better than others...but i think if you do not remap you can actually lose power with just adding the water injection..
If i remember correctly i think Mike explained in more technical terms on a different thread..something to do with water molecules taking up space..
Cold dry air offers the best combustion....thats one reason i chose to do it this way so that i can keep the internal air dry whilst also keeping it cold...granted it is doing nothing to protect and cool the engine though which is the main benefit of water/methanol injection.
