Which exhaust?

Hi all
looking at replacing my tired old RC40 (actually an RC50 stainless steel version) with a nice new one but I am not sure which to buy

To be honest I have been happy with the RC but seeing as I am restoring the car I thought I might treat it to a new one

I really want a stainless exhaust though so it rules out the Maniflow range (I think so anyway) which I quite like, the other option is an RC40 Millennium

Any opinions?

P.S the engine is a Swiftune 1380 in quite a high state of tune so it needs to flow well more importantly than look nice

For strength and free flow I do like the Maniflow.
For my rally cars with a max decibel level of 98 at 0.5m at 45 degrees to the exhaust at 5000 rpm, even a Maniflow with big box plus 2 cherry bombs gets a bit noisy.
I have an RC40 on my 64 Rally car, but I've had to do lots of strengthening and welding of skid plates to make it strong enough. It is quiet, though, and I read about 95 db even after 8 rallies with it.
I believe you can now get a Janspeed exhaust again. I used these years ago and they were great.
Are the stainless ones any good in the long term? Obviously the basic pipes and boxes won't rust, but what about degradation of the insides causing the actual silencing to deteriorate. I do hate really noisy cars, don't you?

Maniflow do make their systems in stainless, but they do cost a bit more. I've always liked play mini stuff for looks and quality, but it's not the best performance wise. I run maniflow on my cooper and a playmini on my van (very loud!).

I'd stick to a maniflow, probably a 1 7/8" system for the sort of power you'll have. They do loads of diferent taipie options, so you should be able to find someting that meets your needs.

They also have a reverse cone megaphone system which some of the miglias run, that is supposed to be very good, but it's not cheap.

maniflow all the way.... makes a wonderful noise my system, cooper freeflow manifold, through to single box centre exit, not large bore and not a stupid tailpipe but it sounds brilliant.

someone told me that mainflow used the old downton designs?? anyone know if this is true?

I am quite fond of the Maniflow stuff (I have one of their stainless LCB's already and will be getting one of their steel inlet manifolds for my twin 1.5 SU's shortly)

They are quite possibly old Downton designs as I believe both Maniflow and Janspeed are both ex employees?? (the Janspeed and Maniflow also look very similar?)

Cooperman, I do like noisy cars hence full straight cut gears and 2 TVR's! (each to their own though!, liked the Miniworld interview by the way)

Thanks for the comment re the MW article.
I think most on here are agreed that Maniflow are the best. There is a good choice of pipe sizes and configurations.
They are OK noise-wise for road cars, my problem, of course, is passing the noise check at rally scrutineering. It's no good having the best car if you are not allowed to start the event!!
I recently fitted an ex-rally Maniflow system to a road-going 1275 and it sounded great.
I think noise is all relative. Whilst my '64 car is fairly quiet at the back, when the twin SU's are on full throttle, the 6-blade fan turning at high revs, the straight cut gears whining away, it's bloody noisy inside. It has no soundproofing, only single layer carpet in the front.
Actually it's a beautiful noise and there is nothing else like it anywhere.

Ive got on mine a maniflow LCB and Janspeed S/S exhaust.
To be honest ive never been to happy with the Janspeed as the tail pipe with its rolled end isnt that pretty and the S/C box and K&N are far noisier!

Been meaning to change it for ages for a maniflow single box centre exit system but funds are now lacking as ive just bought a TVR!!

Power wise the exhaust is good as the chap who had mine on a rolling road was quietly impressed!

Edited to say that Ive got to agree with Cooperman!
With also no sound deadening, S/C box, induction system and throttle on full chat it sounds fing gorgeous!!

Maniflow it is then!, spoke with them today (very helpful, spoke with a chap called David who is an ex Downton employee)

I need to get a 1 7/8" system to go with my LCB, I am having this in stainless steel (probably go for a side exit).I did ask about the megaphone type exhaust and was told that it would give me about 1 bhp difference (ok if you are racing etc) and I would be better spending my money on the fabricated inlet manifold for my twin SU's

Not sure whether to go for the megabore tailpipe at £30 extra though, cannot seem to find any pictures of Maniflow tailpipes??

Going to order it tomorrow, should be with me by the end of the week

Ordered!, full stainless 1 7/8" side exit, single box system

Went for the standard rolled tailpipe in the end

Was reading something last night that may (or may not) be of interest.

Ensure the exhaust wadding is also made of stainless steel, because if its normal steel they can rust from the inside out...
