I know, it isn't a furious v8 or anything, but i'm experiencing some problems with my seat ibiza 1.4mpi; and i'd appreciate any help i can get.

Things to note Before anyone says, 'plug it into a diag kit', previously garages have tried to hook it up, but there is seemingly no connection. I had the Ht leads and plugs changed around 10k miles ago, my mate mentioned how clean the old plugs were and that the engine must run mega lean.

Basically the car cold starts a beaut, even in really cold conditions, will turn over a couple times and fire straight up.

However i'm getting problems when its warm. the bloody thing just won't start. it'll turn over, and sometimes try to fire one or two cylinders, at which point it'll just die and stall itself. If it manages to hit 3 cylinders then it'll run rough, with a blip of the throttle the 4th cylinder will pick up and it will run and idle like perfection instantly.

When it isn't starting, it stinks of petrol, so i assume the injectors are working just fine, and the petrol in the non firing cylinders is just coming right through the cat (it sometimes smells a tad eggy) and exhaust.

any ideas?????, the spark surely must be fine, as once its going it runs perfectly.

my gut instinct is that a sensor is knackered, it thinks its cold starting, dumps way too much fuel in and floods the engine. i am however a complete amateur and wouldn't know what sensor does what.

any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Sounds like the coolant temp sensor has had it. Not sure what age your car is but the sensor will be near the thermostat and should be a square blue one with a 4 pin connector held in with a plastic clip cheap to buy and easy enough to replace

Just a thought, if the coolant temp sensor was borked then surely it'd be indicating wrong on my dash. I disconnected the plug, went for a drive, obviously the indication didn't work. got it up to temp. although it started the engine still had a bit of a fit. (i read somewhere that with the sensor disconnected it'd default to hot start). pluged the sensor back in and it displayed that the temp was approx 91 degrees.

If its the 4 wire sort it is dual purpose one circuit does the temp gauge and the other is for the ecu if your not sure take it to a good garage and have them look at the live data for the engine it will show exactly what the sensir is doing
