Imagine how quick it would be otherwise, and then imagine that car hitting one of the armco barriers or stone walls at those speeds. That's why they're there - better than no hillclimb at all.

I imagine the cones are a safety measure that got a bit out of hand, one quick chicane would be far more entertaining.

interior view the cones slow them down as he is hitting over 100 at times in that video and time added for every cone you hit

I do know why the chicanes are there thank you. My point was that they ruined the flow of the climb as I think everyone will agree. They just looked cheap, silly & somewhat annoying.

If you are going to insert artificial chicanes then at least try & make an effort!

I'm sure that they gave it some thought, decided that hay bales weren't suitable (would have looked cheap, silly and somewhat agricultural). It being a public road, rumble strip type curbs were impractical to fit and would allow the cars to cut them anyway, thus allowing speeds to remain quite high. So using cones gave a visual semi permanent barrier, that if hit wouldn't damage the car unduly. They also wouldn't allow cutting of corners, and if they were, would allow penalty time to be added in proportion to the amount of cones hit, and more importantly reduce the speed of the course.

But hey you knew that already didn't you?

That's incredible - apart from how batst insane the car is, he can really drive, it's never ever pointing straight and he never lifts and never seems out of shape. Amazing!
